So it looks like this one. A Justinian I. 527-565 AD AE Follis. In excellent condition they seem to fetch up to $300 It depends on what exact year it is really. Looking at it, I'd say you could probably get $100 or more for it. I'm pretty new to ancient coins and thought I'd research it a bit! Hope I'm not too far out on estimates. The 'Con' stands for Constantinople mint.

Well the date can be worked out. Your reverse says Anno XXI, meaning 21st Year of Reign. This would be 548AD. Here is one in pretty poor condition: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Justinian...391298419077I can't find any others, sorry. But you've got a nice coin!

Your coin is a nice example of Sear #163, large flan from the Constantinople mint, delta officinae, regnal year 21 (547/48 AD). Nice example like this do command a higher price $200 would be a reasonable price for this example.

The point is not so much that XXI is a different year than it is a different size. Years 12-15 were remarkably large and command a premium for that. Thereafter they get smaller and smaller and lose their premium . Everyone who wants the type prefers the early years when the coins were large. Only a serious specialist wants a year XXI. It is a nice coin with good details, but XXI is not "rare" or in any way special, so I doubt it would be bid up to $100. I'd agree with arnoldoe.

Dear Jacktomy, Yes, your type is common, even with that exact date. Even I have one. A perfect example of a very large early-date Justinian can cost a lot, but it is critical to remember that ebay and retail sellers can ask anything they want for coins. That is not the same as saying they will sell at the those prices, or that they are "worth" the asking price. By the way, I offer you mine for $12,000.
