I got these steel Wheat cent some time ago from my LCS. I have always thought of them as good MS specimens; however I have started to wonder if they were re-plated. I am not as worried about the P and D, but the S is so shinny. I worry the most about that one. The images are not the best, but it might get you an idea. My question is (1) do you think it is re-plated, and (2) what should I look for on steels to make sure that are not re-plated?   |

Not the best photos ,but looks like the P and D are not plated , however the S is surely plated .
To tell if steel cents have been plated is; extreme shine or gloss ,and if a lightly circulated coin looks strangely shiny and pitted .

Original 1943 steel cents will display raw unplated steel on the edge, the color will be fairly dull and you may even see a few small spots of rust. The steel stock sheets were zinc-plated prior to the blanks being punched out, this is the primary reason why so many steel cents develop horrible rust problems.

Thanks for the input. biokemist6, your point about the edge is a great indicator of plating. I have been working on upgrading my Lincoln Cent series and notating the ones that need to be replaced. I will confirm the P & D tonight, but I already added the S to the upgrade list. Thanks again for the input. |

As posted .. Checking the edge is a good start.
If I was guessing ... I think P and S are reprocess/plated.
And maybe the D

I have a bunch of shiny re-plated 43's. They're fun but yeah, too good to be true. Great advice on checking the edge.

Yup think it's chrome plated, or replated. But better pics would help in the future.

P & S appear to have been replated.

Thanks everyone for the input. After checking the edges like suggested, all 3 have been replated  I always thought the 'S' was, but now I know all were. The D must have been done long ago. The plating was chipped off on most of the edge, but you can still clearly see the plating in other areas. I guess it is time to upgrade these, now I will know what to look for next time as the LCS. |

The way they reflect light is a good indicator. They should always reflect light in a circle, evident when you tilt the coin.
