In light of the recent posts about teller tray finds and out of just plain curiosity...
How do you go about asking tellers for the coins out of their trays? Other then just obviously asking for it, is there a certain approach you use? I imagine it to be awkward exchange.
Also, has anyone asked for coins from a cashier at lets say a super market? How about exchanging change from the give-a-penny tray?
I guess Ive been wondering about unusual ways and/or methods people use to obtain coins other than roll hunting.

With the bank, it depends on the individual tellers. If you don't know them and see something, just ask them if you can buy the whole bunch of coins of that denomination in their tray. Even with the tellers I know well, I usually don't like to have them go through the trouble of going through them as it can be time consuming. And I don't want to make other customers wait.
As for the supermarket, if I see something odd (like Half Dollars), I'll ask if I can exchange them for cash. Normally, they're more than happy to exchange them.

the give a penny tray is fair game for anyone, however edicate would be to drop a similar denomination (+) in the tray.

I make it a point to be very friendly with the bank tellers and I also make it a point to spread my business out among six branches of the same bank.
When I come in they all know me and we engage in pleasant conversation. From food to children to anything on the mind. Picking the hours of your visit is also key. If you pick Friday at noon when the bank is swamped with people cashing their checks than that's not a good approach. I tend to pick between 9:30am and 10:00am to visit, less customers and the teller will give you that minute or two to sift through a handful of change. I've even left if it's busy and came back an hour later when the bank was empty.
Lastly I've never gone to the bank with the simple aim of coin hunting, I always make a transaction while peeking at the change tray. I have some tellers trained so well that they will lift the change tray up to the counter so I can take a closer look.
I find this goes a long way when you ask to see a stack of half dollars, quarters, dimes in the tray or ask for a box of pennies etc. It's human nature for people to be nice to people who are nice to them and pleasant to deal with.

A few months ago I was cashing a check at my bank . looking at her coin tray I saw 5 Half dollars , 3 of them had the tell-tale edge color of 40% silver . So instead of asking her if I can have only 3 with the silver edges ,I took all 5 . To me this was the best approach . And yes there was 3 40% Kennedy's in that lot .  |

Being pleasant and social is the way to make friends and pursue your hobby. There are many people out there that just need to be told what to do. I have told clerks to let me go through their change and they pull out the tray. If I find anything, I tell them what it is and ask them if I may exchange for what I find. I also let them know they can do the exchange instead of me. I have had them open up a roll so we could go through it. I have started the intrigue for more than a few.  Edited by Parklane64

I will scan the "take a penny/leave a penny" tray when I am at the checkout. I have found some interesting pennies. Of course, I tell the cashier what and why I am doing what I am doing and leave at least the same demonization.
Once all I had was a nickel so, I took five pennies and gave the nickel to the cashier.
I will update this post or a separate post of some of my finds.
