Regular design 2017 coins can be bought at the mint for $24.50. I ordered one a few days ago and it arrived just today.

Do you mean aside from a bunch of dirty hands and the grass where it was said to be found?

What a awesome ending. Seems like a one-of-a-kind situation to me. Buy the holder, not the coin... Deserves an article somewhere. KoolKat, I'm glad you were vindicated. Really cool outcome.

Greatest coin story I've heard in a very long time. Glad they got it back to you. Thank you for sharing that.

Ha, the CCCS verification centre cannot find it. That doesn't help this thread at all.

Did CCCS just give up on hearing from the mint? Or did I miss a post about that?

Read a couple pages back CCCS answered that the RCM was not forth coming and it seems the owner wanted his coin back so he graded as the label says, unfortunately the RCM is producing a 2017 polar bear design.

You mean the RCM _was_ producing a 2017 polar bear design, in 2016.

There was hope the RCM due to 2017, Canada being 150 years, they were going to issue special circulating coins and not the regular designs but now we know there is a least the polar bear design in sets as some collectors have already received the 2017 sets so it's not that unusual for the RCM to produce 2017 coins in 2016. Although the story is cool, this coin is what it is

It's really a great story. Possibly someone toured the mint during production at an unknown time and was given a sample 2017 toonie, then lost it in the grass. KoolKat finds it while metal detecting, even though the odds of that happening are incredibly slim.

But for one part - I'm unimpressed with CCCS's role in this saga. Sure, months later once RCM began advertising the gift sets with 2017 regular loonies it's a no brainer that the coins were minted in 2016 if not earlier. But otherwise CCCS queries were shunned by RCM and I'd wonder the reason RCM chose not to cooperate. Or why CCCS can't tell if a toonie is real or fake without RCM involvement. Neither this situation nor the "gold" silver dollar reflect well on the caliber of error certification by CCCS, in my opinion.

Just wondering if the RCM had changed the metal compositions on the 2017 Toonie and loaned a few rolls out to the vending machine companies to test in their vending machines?

Remember the 2000P dime.
