I have some proof and some nice MS Red Lincolns coins I acculmulated from a number of "lower-tiered grading services" that I felt would cross-over nicely , even at a lower grade, with guys like PCGS, NGC, ICG, etc. Since I bought these at shows, I was able to buy the coin and not the slab.
All things being equal, we all know that, for instance, a PCGS MS66 coin is worth more than ___ grading company (lower tiered services that will remain nameless) in the same grade. However, when I picked up the coins, the dollars I saved were substantial compared to the same coin in the same grade from the likes of PCGS and NGC. Now, if I cross them over, I would still be ahead. The goal is to keep one for my collection and sell the dups. Proceeds will go to other coins and feed my addiction and "got to have it" mentality.
Question...do you think guys like PCGS are more "prejudicial" when crossing slabs or less inclined if the same exact coin is submitted raw?
I don't want to believe that a grader would say, "What the...this coin was graded MS67 by those guys? That's a 3 point penalty! Grade that MS64...I'll show them how to grade." I'm realistic and I don't think the MS67 Red Lincolns I got would cross to a MS67 with PCGS or NGC, but even if they graded down to a MS66 or even MS65 (which I think and hope the coins truly are), their value in a PCGS holder is far greater than what I paid.
Also, I have some nice proof coins, I really don't like breaking out slabs. There I am holding my breath, touching the coin (on the edge) with all inert materials, and hoping that I don't sneeze during the process.
What would you do...let them cross completely in their current slab? ...at a minimum grade?...or break them out and hope I don't breathe on the coin and submit them raw? Which do you think or has gotten you the best results? In the slab or pure raw?
Your thoughts and experiences please. Thanks!
