Thank you, Captain. That one is not mine - just an auction I'm watching. This one is mine, although it hasn't arrived yet.

Society of Medalists Issue #74, December 1966. Thomas Jefferson. Sculptor: Ralph J. Menconi.
Per the Artist's Notes:

Quote:
The irregular shape and handmaid quality of the medal reflects the very early medals and coins of the Republic. . .that period before and up to the Declaration of Independence. The patina-- a deep, rich brown-coppery color reflects these early pieces.

The obverse includes the famous first sentence from the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence:

The reverse includes the heading of the Declaration as it was drafted and signed:

Menconi's notes also includes his descriptions of the symbols used:

Quote:
"A young Miss Liberty represents the emergence of a new nation. . .The Mayflower. . .symbols of the British Stamp Act. . .the Boston Massacre [represented] by coffins from a poster the colonial propagandists used to promote anti-British feelings. . .Appearing on the coffins are the initials of the five slain men, among them a C.J.A-- Crispus J. Attucks. . .and The Boston Tea Party. . ."

Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell complete the tableau.

Here's a silver and bronze pair struck by MACO for the joint numismatic convention of the American Numismatic Association ( ANA) and the Canadian Numismatic Association (CNA) held in 1962.

Here's another trip down memory lane courtesy of the folks at MACO. The medal was struck for the Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial Association to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Nice medal! I'm just about to start reading Walden. The quote on the medal is from the "Conclusion" chapter of that book.

Back in the '70s, a cousin who lived in MA invited me and his younger brother to visit - the summer of the Boston Tricentennial (?). We visited Walden Pond, and it was one of the most serene places I've ever been. Also went to Salem...
