Both of my first attempts at obtaining a decent Trade dollar were ugly. The first, I was pretty amateurish thinking the poor photos were maybe just a poor attempt on seller's part, since their feedback was exellent and provided a very detailed description. I'm happy to return and accept it as a beginner's mistake

And very fortunate to be a member here and have access to all the collective experience and wisdom of you all.

Just found a decent deal on a certified xf40 same year for $245 and with that purchase I'm done buying for a while.

Now I can focus on examining all I've collected since Spring and start coming up with more good photos and topics for the forum.

Here's the coin I just bought

You made a nice buy on your XF 40 as the coin is problem free and looks original and is in a PCGS holder. The raw XF coins were selling for $200 and the XF details at $150. The 1877 S is a common date, but PCGS still has only graded 164 is XF 40. I really like the history on the Trade dollars and I have been considering making the Trade dollar my next set to collect.

Are there vams for the Trades like with the Morgans and Peace dollars? Noticed my new pickup has the micro-s mintmark.

I'm also interested with history of the rise of modern global economy, and I think the Trade dollars good material examples of the era. Plus, I'm excited to have a contemporary pair to my mysterious-as-heck (1792 Mo) Type II China Trade Boston-produced Portrait Dollar. Anyone reading this thread interested in Swamperbob's expertise with coins of that era?

I'm fascinated by the Spanish milled dollars and hope to someday find a Mexico-minted original 8R with trace Au content for my collection.

My first thought was salt water damage. I see others are thinking that as well.

Breen did some work on varieties for the Trade dollar. The 1877 S, mirco S is a Breen-5814, and it is rare. Here is a photo from NGC on the mrico s for the 1877 S. The S is .84mm high. I do not have any idea on value for the mirco s. If you do have a mirco s, it is a keeper.

Here's a crop from seller's photo. This mm is lower set, but looks like same microfont to me. Awesome, thank you, Slider!
