All it takes is befriending security, and a simple plan is all it takes.

I would think that this is the method that all these "Mint Sport" Monstrosities are smuggled out of the various Mints as well.

Of course it was an 'inside' job.

Quote: Barnes also argued Lawrence should only have to pay back $130,000 — the amount he actually made selling the 17 pucks of gold — rather than the $190,000 the 17 laundered pucks are estimated to be worth. So when Mr Barnes' $50,000 Mercedes Benz is stolen and sold for parts, is he going to say to the judge "don't fine the defendant for what my car is worth, just give me what he sold it for and I will be happy." Where do these lawyers come up with these defences? What a goof.

Obviously, the judge didn't accept Barnes' suggestion that he only have to pay back what he got for the stolen gold.
Here's another stupid argument: Barnes argued that Lawrence should get a shorter sentence because the Mint had lax security measures making it easy for Lawrence to STEAL the gold. So, if it was difficult to steal something, the sentence should be longer?

That is what I find interesting. The court appears to have ruled that he has to repay the current market value of the gold, not the value when he stole it. And he doesn't have to start repaying it until after he is released so he'll win just on the diminished future value of a dollar. lol
But why not seize his assets now? I'm sure on a Mint salary he must have something of value.

Was out for dinner with some collegues the other night...turns out one of their sons worked with this guy at the mint. He worked side by side with him and had no clue...to top things off, the mint needs to test the sensitivity of their new hand held wands to ensure it won't happen again. They actually made this poor kid put a puck where the sun don't shine so they could test the sensitivity. I hope they let him keep the puck, in exchange for his dignity!
