It's virtually impossible to guarantee it won't happen again. Even facilities with the tightest security, have flaws.

Guilty!
The article makes no mention of what defense, if any, was argued.

So funny! Wouldn't the look on his face give him away? Having a puck of gold up your bum doesn't sound too comfortable!

Thanks for the update Sifu. Quote: Court heard Lawrence set off the archway metal detector — which all 1,000 secure-area employees must pass through — 28 times in 41 days between Dec. 15, 2014 and March 2, 2015. Often the readings were sky-high, the equivalent of carrying a concealed knife.
Still, he was cleared each time by a secondary search with a hand-held wand.
In fact, the Mint never began investigating Lawrence, nor did it ever discover (independently) that its gold stock was being stolen. This is not a case of some criminal devising a master plan. This is a complete failure of security. Lawrence was never a smart guy. How do we know this? When you steal something, you can't leave behind clues that can be traced back to you. He could have gotten away with this if: 1. He asked for cash instead of a check. If the gold buyer does not deal in cash, find somewhere else to sell your bars. 2. Kept the cash on him only. Definitely do not deposit the cash in a bank that is in the same mall where you sold your stolen merchandise. The problem is that he would have gotten caught eventually because he sent some of his cash to his parents in Jamaica. That would be something which could be traced back to him. Also, if you set off the metal detector 28 times in 41 days with the readings he had, it is an absolute failure of the security staff and/or policies set forth by RCM. It should not take a bank worker to tip off the authorities to his crime.

Yes, definitely a security fail. And I think he should have sold the gold bars at a different place each time. Then gone to 18 different stores to cash the checks.

The important thing was that he was given a fair trial and did not get a "bum rap". ' ' [punman strikes again]

If he were smart, he would have mailed his relatives the gold directly, instead of creating any paper trail at all. The mint, like any other place, can't have cameras on every inch of the facility. The fact that he only got caught when a bank employee tipped off police speaks for itself. I'm sure, if this guy can stroll out with as much as he did, and as many times as he did, there's likely other more sophisticated heists at the mint that have yet to come into light. With as much gold and silver going in and out of there, I bet they have no accurate method for keeping track of it all.

A stack of these pucks could probably fit into the handle of a flashlight. If one battery was removed and gold put into its place, the flashlight would likely still work so long as the battery was new. I'm sure a maintenance worker could sneak a bunch of stuff out using that tactic or several others. Personally, if I worked there, I would not attempt to steal anything, as tempting as it may be. A government job, pension, and work environment seems much better than $180k and 3 years behind bars.
