Quote: This might be the worse 1884 CC posted .. Nonsense- it has more character than any MS example. Paralyse, that's a superb half eagle.

Thanks Numisma! I thought it looked exceptional for the grade and I needed one for a type set so I snapped it up last year for a very good price, since you don't see CAC gold all that often.

1885-CC, my only GSA Morgan dollar, considered second tier at the time of encapsulation because of the toning.

@numisma & goldrush, I used to have an 1881-CC in similar condition. Because of the tidal wave of GSA coins, pricing of cc's that have seen heavy circulation is not too much lower than mint condition. The conditional rarity of cc morgans skews heavily to the G-VF survivors. For me that's the whole thing. Being able to touch the same coin a miner or saloonkeeper handled in the 1880's...and not worry about fingerprints...
Collecting coins pre GSA, 1881 cc's were esteemed rarities. PCGS shows less than 450 in XF40 and lower. Today there are 10x that number just in MS65.

Lots of nice CC's but no S's yet. A semi_key with decent price jumps in MS

The run of San Fran Morgans from 1885-S to 1889-S in MS63 and better are underappreciated condition scarcities and surprisingly difficult to locate with clean fields and cheek.

Thanks GR58! Circulated trouble-free 85-CCs are hard to find so I got the toned GSA leaving a hole in my album. I like your solution of using placeholder Ikes with notes in your albums!

This thread is really helping me evaluate some of the coins in my collection. Some of them are not as bad as they look in in hand versus my pictures. This is one of those. 1886 S Morgan
