I live in Kansas City. When I get new rolls of quarters or dollars from the bank, they are almost always D, but on two of the pres dollars, I got rolls of P.

I have also heard that the Mississippi is the dividing line, but I would imagine that it also has a fair amount to do with which territory of the 12 Fed Reserve Banks you are in. (Off subject - there are only 12 FRBs to cover 50 states. Why are two of them in Missouri?)

Be carefull of indentifying those Presidential dollar rolls.....unless ordered from the Mint, the rolls are rolled by rolling companies, and it's notorious to NOT BE ABLE TO INDENTIFY "P" OR "D" without opening the roll.......and THE STATE IT WAS "ROLLED" IN MAY NOT BE WHERE IT WAS "MINTED" !!

Well I thank everyone for responding. I guess it's really that the mint delivers to certain states and that's it. I live on the East Coast and have few books with just a few coins missing and they are all D's...

I'll have to go to the West coast just to get change!

I do have one other question? Pretty much, are they evenly manufactured (P and D mints)? There is also a Lincoln Cent book I have where I am missing both P and D on a lot; just have the regular date with no mint marks.... I know S is uncommon for a lot of coinage. They obviously did a lot less in volume. Very hard to come by on the older coins.

Because we are "The Show Me State" and we wanted to be shown the money

Seriously though, I think it has to do with the fact that there really were no major cities between KC and San Fran in 1913 when the Federal Reserve was created. Denver would have been the closest thing to being a large city then but it was still much smaller than KC and less accessable to the East.

The Mint has nothing to do with the distribution of coinage. The Federal Reserve purchases the coinage from the Treasury and it is distributed by the regional FRBs. FRBs that are west of the Mississippi generally receive Denvers and in the East, the get Phillys. The Chicago Reserve seems to usually get Denvers but also supplied from Philly at times as well.
