I was wondering if this Farthing I have was Non Regal ? The period is hot at the moment so I was hoping you wouldn't mind giving your opinions. Weight - 3.34g Size - 20mm Sorry about the picture quality, I will do some more 2moro if required.

I see nothing unusual. What makes you think it could be non-regal?

Even good non regals are usually pretty obvious and yours looks to be a perfectly normal, though very worn, official specimen. This said, if accurate, both size and weight are WAY under, so a bit puzzling. I'm attaching an image of an uncirculated official coin (Colin Cooke) for comparison.

Thanks for the replies gents. It was the weight that I was concerned with Algan, as Hogarth pointed out it is a lot under what it should be. I have read that at the time there were problems with the coinage but this just seems a bit excessive to me

The underweight is not that uncommon. Full weight is probably rarer.

In discussing weight the most unusual feature is being overlooked, i.e: a diameter of 20mm. The purpose of my posting photos of the Colin Cooke coin was so comparison could be made between that and the coin at the head of the topic. Tenbob's coin shows no evidence of missing peripheral space or (what remains of) denticle detail yet is 3 to 4 mm smaller in diameter than it should be.

I'm not sure why that didn't register with me, and I've been handling a lot of copper farthings this week too! Of course, it's the bronze farthing @ 20mm. I've got quite a few finishing on ebay at present, I'll have a quick measure and see what I come up with. One of them is the same date as the OP too.

Here's the result. Quite surprising:
1730 24 mm 1733 23 mm 1734 23 mm 1735 23 mm 1735 23.5 mm 1737 23 mm 1739 23 mm 1746 23 mm 1773 23 mm 1774 23.5 mm 1775 21.5 mm 1779 23.5 mm
Nothing comes in at 22 mm. Very odd.

I spent a few minutes measuring a random selection this morning too. None came in at anything near the 20mm diameter of Tenbob's coin.

But I'm showing some that are 1.5 mm oversized, so it's possible that quality control was not that good.

I'm sure it wasn't, but what still puzzles me is how no peripheral die detail has been lost on a 20mm coin. I would expect short denticles up to the edge all round at least, but all detail is present as it would be if the coin was of normal diameter. The size of the dies would remain the same no matter what size blank was used.
PS: You're quite right, most of my 18th century farthings are larger than 22mm too!
