Apart from two small pits near the date (planchet defect) and a slight rough area at S12 obverse, this 1809 Half Cent is quite nice. Color is a smooth chocolate with great luster and hints of the original red peeking through underneath. Cohen 6, Manley die state 1.0, reverse is rotated. Well struck, even for the early die state, albeit very slightly misaligned. Pleasantly surprised that I won this coin, and seller even sent in original paper envelope from dealer. I already know what my grade is, but I'm curious as to what CCF thinks. First obverse picture and last reverse picture are done with no post-processing other than image size cropping. Wow .. you have some very nice coins.
Old copper is nice to something I am good at grading ..
But I do love them.
Would the area on the date be considered planchet defects, which I think is not uncommon.
I think it would be easy to say this is a AU coIn.
But hoping the experts ...are seeing mid MS grade

The copper used during this period is notorious for planchet defects caused by uneven composition, transport from overseas, and numerous other issues. As a result, you see lots of coins with planchet voids, odd colors, extensive corrosion/deterioration, uneven thickness, and various other issues that make finding perfect coins very, very difficult.

Paralyse, Looks to be AU55 comparing to graded 55's. It is a beautiful coin/piece of history! My raw 09 might make VG. Again nice coin. AG

Not sure if the planchet defects would affect the grade, but I'd say AU-55. Great coin!

AU53. as paralyse mentioned, its tough to find a clean example without any issues. due to its grade the obverse defect is almost certainly original to the coin. very nice and a tough date to get in this grade. since its not PMD I would hope it graded straight.

Lovely, at a minimum, AU-55 albeit the potential of Details grade w/pitting (key focal area.)

Solid 53+ at a TPG. I like it at 50 considering the planchet flaws......Stunning example!!

Beautiful coin! They don't appear to be planchet defects to my eye though. Beautiful coin none the less!
