My son works at a grocery store and they other day he gave me this Indian Head penny. It stumped me right off the bat. It is not magnetic nor does it seam to react to a magnet as silver does. My thought is that it may have been used as some kind of science experiment to show how certain chemicals will react with copper. That's just a guess, I could be way off.

What do you think?

I'd bet on mercury. If so, wash your hands and don't touch it again.

Agree, more in the direction of painting or plating than dipped in mercury - just doesn't have that shimmering look.
