$500 shipping! Too bad I don't see a single item in the pictures that I actually want, or would actually get if I did want it.

If there was list of items and grades, I would definitely take a serious look at this listing. As it is, I don't trust it. It's too much of a risk.

A bit like buying a second hand car.

You should look closely at the whole collection in detail, before deciding to buy.

Can't do that with ebay.

I would not bid any more that %100 for anything on ebay; size of dollar risk becomes too great.

I agree this listing is poor but when I asked the guy for a list of coins and grades, he sent it. I don't have time to go through it all this morning but after the first two pages, I see he has almost the entire cent collection (large and small) in MS, save for a few dates.

Whatever the reasons for this sale, whoever wins is likely to cherry pick and then sell everything else individually.

I would estimate the very highest he would get on ebay would be between 15K and 20K.

He's never going to see bids that high..IMHO..

If he's cherry picked the good stuff out and selling them separately..then there is no way that he's offering 110 k trends....

Buyer beware...!!

I saw an 1896 one cent MS65 in his photos and I think it trends a $1000 so I guess there will be some decent pickings.

Maybe his wife gave him an ultimatum... to "get rid of those darned coins or else!!"

I'd miss her, but I'd get over it.

I definitely agree, this guy is going to be very disappointed if he sells his collection and doesn't get anywhere near what he wants. He doesn't have a detailed list of what is in the collection and has only a few poor pictures...this is a recipe for disaster (and that includes the buyer too!). This seller would be lucky to get even $15000, I don't believe for a minute that bidding will ever reach that high.

This brings back interesting memories of when I was trying to sell off the bulk of my collection a number of years ago. I was heading back to school and some extra money definitely would have been useful. I had 77 coins, mostly George V and some Edward VII, all in a minimum of VF/XF, with about a dozen AU/MS coins. There was a variety of everything...large and small cents, silver & nickel 5 cents, dimes, quarters (no halves) and both a 35 & 36 voyageur dollar. Trends on what I had at that time was $1500. I put the entire collection on ebay, put a detailed list of what was in the collection in the ad and put a reserve of $1200 (80% of trends). Keep in mind this was few years before the financial meltdown. After a few goes at it, nobody was bidding anything over $250! I even had one guy out in Vancouver offering me $200 for the collection, with the catch that I was supposed to overnight courier the collection to him (from Ontario!) and and put insurance on the collection payable to him if it went missing. Needless to say I told him what he could do to himself.

I then decided to put my collection in the local buy/sell/trade paper...same deal as with ebay I listed everything I had and this time put a price of about 2/3 of trends on it. The only two calls I had on my collection was from 2 different idiots each thinking that they were going to get a collection of 77 mint state Victorian halves for a grand total of $1500 from me. Yeah right, dream on!

If you can't put your coins on ebay as singles, with good photos, you're not going to get a lot of bidding activity at the levels you want.

This owner would be better off packing up his collection and taking it to a brick-and-mortar dealer within a day's drive and putting the coins up for consignment.

I'v been liquidating a good portion of my collection in the past year and its a tough business selling coins 1 by 1 but its the best. At least you can control your sell price. A good option with this guys large collection was an I-Collect auction through a reparable dealer like Colonial Acres. It would have got great expos-or and the good stuff would sell well making up for the lower grade stuff. I tried selling stuff in bulk and it just dose't work due to larger price and collectors only want or need a certain coin to fill the empty pocket page pouch. I feel for this seller and there has to be a reason to liquidate and wants his money soon. Economy and Christmas are big factors here too. Here is my census on my ebay items sold just to give an out look of the Canadian economy.

Quebec and Ontario - %90 sales
Lower British Columbia - %5 sales
The rest of Canada - %4.5 sales
USA - $.5 sales

I don't suspect bad intent here, but a disappointed seller (when his collection inevitably sells for WAY less than he expects) will have every incentive to acquire replacements to match the vague description in this listing.
450 graded coins in albums, only a handful shown in the pictures.
If it were me who just undersold by $60,000 or more, I know I would be tempted to do that.
Once again, I am not saying that this guy is not honest, just pointing out the dangerous position that a buyer would in when this hits the fan.
I hope the best for all parties involved.

I think that someone (or a few) gave him bad advise about how to dispose of his collection. I feel sorry for him. On any number of coin sites or ebay, he could have cherry picked some out and sold them singly.
This will bother him til his dying days when he sees what the difference "Trends" is vs sale price and what a bulk sale with poor photos brings him.
