I predict you won't see the dates, everything ends up in your kilo bar, and you wish you had that pretty spoon back. Let me know if my prediction is correct. :)

@kbbpll We could make this interesting. How about you offering a coin of approx. the same apparent grade & date as those on the spoon and if you are correct and none of the coin's dates are visible, I will send you what's left of the coins and spoon and you get the silver bullion for nothing. But if it does work & the dates are visible, you have to send me the coin free of charge and it is mine to keep.
To make it even more interesting and to be fair for both, if 1 out of the 3 dates is visible, it will be counted as if none were visible and you get the coin and balance of the silver. Likewise, if only 2 out of the 3 are visible, I get your coin and keep everything. :) My prediction is that all three will be visible.... What am I doing, I don't even buy lottery tickets!! lol

It was a prediction, not a wager. Besides, the only George V silver I have are a couple quarters in much worse condition http://goccf.com/t/241560&SearchTerms=1929). I'm not putting up any 1948s... It would be cool though if your experiment works. From the photos it looks like the solder is right on the date for 2 out of 3. The obverses do look nice.

If it were me, I would sit down with my Dremel and about 2 dozen fiber cutting discs, and take my time removing as much of the silver spoon as possible (without damaging the coins), then use my miniature Smith "Little Torch Outfit" (model 23-1001LP) [used for Pinpoint welding], then start removing the balance of the spoon & solder..
There is a good chance that when you start removing pieces of the spoon, you may be able to see the dates..
This little bugger uses oxy-acetylene gases and can reach tempatures upto 6300°F for cutting or welding..
Whatever way you choose to take on this project, good luck.. (I believe the Dremel will remove about 90-95% of the extra silver with no additional damage to the coins)

Judging by the solder job in your photo I highly doubt that was done by a jeweler and probably not with silver solder, Good luck

@Broken-Coin... I must say your Logon name is appropriate for this particular post. Yeah, thanks, I was thinking about breaking out my dremel but I've used it before and I don't think it would take 2 dozen. Probably just 4 or 5. The torch is great! I saw a micro torch on ebay but runs on Butane...not sure it will get hot enough. Will go back & check the specs. @oldmike - could have been anyone, I agree.

Maybe when you're done you can make the coins into actual spoons.

Those are nice kbbpll.
@TaeKenDo, the suspense is killing us, just run down to your local Crappy Tire, get the tools you need and do the deed. No matter what you do the coins will basically be hole fillers with nice obverses, they will never be truly collectible coins.

with DBM even a soldering iron held to the spoon side should release the coin
