I haven't bought any coins this year at all. It has been very liberating :)

sherwooddavid - did you lose interest in all aspects of coin collecting or just the non circulating issues?

punman - I'm still interested in NCLT but am very very selective now what I buy. I probably spent $20K or more in the last 3 years at RCM but will not be a MC member this year. I got very turned off seeing coins I purchased at the mint dropping in value and selling for big discounts on the secondary market. There's so many coins coming out each month I can't keep track of it all. I still have a nice collection of NCLT but got rid of the all the junk I bought at a big loss.
I've started to tinker in Canadian banknotes and started collecting every series from 1935 and really enjoy it. All the best

@ sherwooddavid Glad to know you haven't left the hobby entirely. The opportunity to dibble dabble in one type of numismatics, then switch to another is one of it's advantages and keeps collecting interesting. I think banknote collecting is an excellent choice plus the requirement of minimal storage is a huge bonus. Good luck!

holy cow I havent been on this part of the forum in a bit lol

feels like I crossed over from Earth to Mars lol

Have not bought anything RCM in AGEs.

I got tired also of finding everything on the secondary market from reputable dealers on ebay.

I now completely ignore RCM coins, the only thing that caught my eye recently was that 2 oz 150th anniversary silver matte finish but thats it and I will probably wait on that until a big flood shows up on the market.

I know the statement was several months ago, but...

There are so many options, I had to calm myself down and pick something. I haven't been collecting very long at all and I've not yet delved into RCM releases and I dont think I will. It's really just too much. There are a couple things I'd like to have and I mean a couple, as in two.

Colorized, encrusted or glow-in-the-dark coins are not my bag.

5. RCM needs to work with Canada Border Services to build a tax exempt shipping code. I have purchased many RCM items from US dealers and have been charged duties for the items, despite having all paperwork properly filled out. Recovering duties on these items is usually a 6 month process, with no guarantee of success ... and requires a fair bit of diligence

--------------------------------------------------------------

Border services is usually too quick to charge duties on things. If you're lucky and just a little bit over, sometimes they don't charge you, but I once had a package which fell below the duty criteria, but got charged anyway. It's not just the duty that's a pain, but the Post Office always charges a $5 "handling fee", which sometimes makes the total charge more than a third of the value of the product. I wrote to them to get a refund that time, and the idiots sent a check - for 78 cents. Talk about a waste.

The threshold for Canada is artificially low - what is it now, still only $20? Americans get $800 before duty's charged? I know this is one of the things that bugs Trump - that he wants to see it more equal. I hope at least he's successful in this pursuit - Canadians always get ripped off when it comes to this sort of thing. Our limit should have been increased 30 years ago. I don't know why there hasn't been more of a protest to our government officials over the years. Maybe this NAFTA renegotiation will finally wake them up.

I bought a silver $100 for $100 in an NGC 70 holder for $88 USD + $6 s/h. Total cost is $94 and it is a NON TAXABLE item. Border services reassigned the designation from bullion to jewellery and charged me $23 in fees and taxes. That is a complete joke and you can't fight it! How can you tax people 20 to 40% on non-taxable items?

Canadian tax laws are like water, they will always find a way through cracks and crevices , no matter how much you try to dam it up .
Also agree on the point made about not being able to keep up with RCM release's. Banknotes , colonials , and condors do it for me now ( with the odd NCLT here and there).

I have a question for my northern friends. I've done it before and just a couple days ago, again, shipped a contest prize to a member in Canada from the U.S. Are there any duties or taxes to be paid by the recipient?

Judging by the price of shipping, that shouldn't be. USPS First Class costs more than three times to Canada what it does within the U.S. That's ridiculous to me. It costs me just a few bucks more to ship to Moscow than to a city a few miles north of the border?

For anyone who has had there items miss identified by Canadian Customs, you could go through there pointless process or you could just place a small claims charge against them for 50k which costs you less than 100$.
What they're doing is a crime,I use the reasons fraudulent classification of items, fraudulent documentation, failure to provide services as outlined in the custom and regulations of Canada policy, they tried to strong arm me but after 30 days they sent a letter with a check including my money spent on small claims with the conditions that I drop the suit. I warned them if they this happened again to me I would proceed with a class action lawsuit and they never responded.

I think maybe it time to move forward with a class action lawsuit agains Canadian Customs. In the meantime, look into small claims court in your province, but dont abuse it, they end up charging you more if you do.

Good luck.

Give me my maple leafs and I am happy. I did get in on the 2012 farewell to the penny silver set, but I agree with others that there is way too much to keep track off. Plus, a lot of it is novelty and the limited aspect puts most at a price point that is not justifiable to me.
