My collection is starting to get too large to manage and I've decided to consolidate it. I've branched off into too many different areas and have lost focus on what my original goals were. I want to finish my 5 cent silver collection and this will (hopefully) help me do that.

My collection consists of mostly high grade Canadian decimal coins and dollars with a lot of junk silver. I'm keeping the nicest of my 5 cent series and a few other pieces I would hate to lose. Many of my coins are raw (80-90%) and many have varieties, should I get them graded first?

I've never sold a coin so I'm looking for tips from all of you to make this easier. Any recommendations would help thanks.

I would list with the best possible photos and use different lighting directions to better capture the beauty of them.

More pics the better..more blow-ups the better..

Make sure that the "zoom" option is ON..

Start with the date and country and denomination in the title..and don't use the word "rare"..

This is what I like to see..Good luck..!!
Rest in Peace

Depending on your time availability, you might want to check with any LCS first to at least get an offer.

ebay is time consuming and between PayPal fees and ebay fees not inexpensive.

I'm about to do the same.... if you want let's compare notes and share what works and what doesn't.... I have seen your 5 cent collection and it's very impressive.. my coins are pretty average and I don't suspect they'll garner much interest or attention.

Thanks for the advice DEVLEC: Pictures will be key for my listings.
AgCoinAu: yes, I will definitely keep you in the loop, we can PM about this in the future.

My gut is telling me to list at 7 day auction, start at 0.99$ and offer lower shipping charges. I'm really curious to know what the community thinks about that. At what price threshold do I track and insure packages?
My ebay account will have 0 feedback when I start which will cause me problems. Are there any suggestions to help minimize the effects of a lower rating?

moxking: Went to the LCS today. I know the owner quite well and was offered a decent price for my gold and silver which I may take. The numismatic pieces will do better in the open market IMO.

Have you though about posting coins for sale here on CCF? Some other members may be interested in what you have for sale.

I would take a careful look at what you are selling, before starting at $0.99, as I buyer I love it, because I can pick up less popular/common items at a good discount, as a seller I have been burned a few times with really low sale prices because buyers did not appear. I often prefer fixed price or best offer, the sales quantity is a bit slower, but I seem to realize better prices, or at least price I am comfortable selling it at.

If you are looking to clear everything out, $0.99 cent start is the way to go, especially if it is as 20-50 lots ending over a couple hours, kind of a mini auction. ASYN does this really well, 200-300 items per day, all staggered end times so people can bid on one item to the next.

Personally I am ok with a 0 rating seller if it is clear to me they are unloading a collection, if you are only selling a few high priced items, I am a bit more careful.

I would definitely try CCF to sell the same stuff just be honest and say what the LCS offered and people will know what they have to beat.

Please don't do this you will get less then you could imagine on most of them.
Try a feeless avenue like CCF BST or kijiji first.
For ebay build your rep with small but cheap desirable items on your 99Cent auctions, be prepared to get only 99 cent.
Most items I find buy it now with best offers enabled get you the most amount of sales and money balance. If you aren't flexible on the price you list at all please don't allow best offers.

This is just from my experience selling lower to mid end doubles and the occasional large value coin.

Edit to answer question:

I usually start tracking somewhere around $100 give or take $25 depending on the buyer.

I have been trying to "Thin Out" my collections for the last 2 years and I am not having much success.
I seem to be buying more than I am selling and my collections have actually expanded Not become smaller as was original plan

I have tried a few different methods to sell from listing on ebay to consigning coins to an online auction house with varying degrees of success.

A 99 cent start auction on ebay will attract more bidders and the coins have a greater chance of selling But in my experience it is unusual to get full value for your coins selling this way.
Fixed price listings with the option of "Best Offer" gives you more control over what the coin sells for but it usually takes a lot more time for the coins to actually sell.

I wish you well with your sales and keep us updated here

Are you a "take whatever I can get" kind of seller or a "I'd rather get something closer to what I paid" kind of seller? If the former than go with low start auctions and don't spend a lot of time on it. If the later then go with fixed price as low as you can stand or maybe higher with Best Offer for the odd more noteworthy piece. Of course it's possible to be both at the same time and list some stuff one way and the better stuff the other way as you prefer.

Starting at zero feedback will be tough. If you're not in a rush, hunt around and find a few things to buy. Doesn't have to be coins; clothes for the spouse, presents for the nephews, anything you'd be buying anyway. Gets your feedback score started with some positives and shows you're more likely to be around to actually deliver what somebody buys.

Remember, on ebay the buyer is always right unless there is proof positive otherwise. If you're shipping by letter mail you WILL get Item Not Received cases you WILL have to refund so be prepared. If you're selling high volume then it's not such a big deal if a few go 'missing'. International sales (even just to the US) go 'missing' at a higher rate than domestic in our experience so don't be afraid to tack an extra dollar or two on the shipping to self-insure against loses. Tracking is a trade off between what a buyer would be willing to pay and what you are comfortable writing off as lost. We use $90 for domestic, $60 for the US and $0-$60 for international depending on the buyer's feedback. Sit down and write up a standard boiler plate Description for your listings. Especially important to detail how you will calculate combined shipping. Personal opinion - combined shipping should ALWAYS be cheaper than buying individually. Some sellers charge the actual cost so you end up paying more the more you buy which is discouraging. Many buyers calculate the total cost including shipping so will bid higher by the amount you'll discount the shipping on multiple items.

You'll also get more interest if you accept returns. It's generally not worth arguing about and ebay will just force you to accept it at the end of the day anyway.

Remember, if you're going to hit $30k in sales in a year then you have to register for HST.

Dont start at 0.99 unless liquidating and willing to take a loss.

After reading this I can already tell you what I plan to do...

1) use kiji first...2) here on CCF 3) ebay with lots starting at around 40% trends

I think anything after $100 it's worth to ship using tracking and have just one flat shipping rate that may account for the stamp, envelope and perhaps just a little more for any of the items that may go "missing' like $2.25 flat rate shipping...

I use a cut-off of $75 for registered shipping...a $50 hit is a lot easier to take than a $95 hit...

Starting auction prices at 35-40% of trends (assuming that you are fine with only 1 bid) is also probably the most reasonable approach.

I use $75ish as cutoff for tracked shipping. I have lost a few at $20-$30, but for the most part have not had any issue with items going missing. For low value it is usually a minimum of $2.99, stamp + eBay/pp fees, supplies etc... and a little leftover for self insurance. This accounts for variances in envelope weight as well, most are $0.85, but a TPG hard plastic holder puts the coin into the $1.80 stamp category.

I wouldn't even bother with e-bay only for your low end items its a ripe off and you will never get what your looking for on most high end items. The trouble with $.99 starts are that almost all bidders wait till the end last 1 minute and bid usually never getting close to trend for your product.
I would try all other forms of liquidating them Craig's list, Kijji, hear on CCF I have been doing pretty good on Face Book there are several coin groups who buy, sell, trade coins I usually average 60-70% of trends and with NO FEES I offer free delivery in Canada on Face Book. I used to use Chuck Moore Auction to move my coins always done good with Chuck (RIP). I even tried the coin shows in Vancouver with a table set up it was O K but I make more money in a day working (iron working) then I make on coin sales at a show so I do this when I'm laid off and not working anyway good luck on your new quest
