I would probably buy an Ali coin if offered. Remember, he was not just a boxer.

However, I do see how this may have the unintended consequence of opening a flood gate of unwanted possibilities.

(For the record, I would probably buy a Bowie and/or Prince commemorative. )

Very true. He transcended his sport like no other athlete in modern history.

But it is too bad that there has never been a coin to honor Thurgood Marshall. I was searching online to see if there was a coin in his honor and all I found were Chief Justice John Marshall coins.

My list for people, groups, or events I would like to see honored with limited edition coins are:

Thurgood Marshall
President Barack Obama
Smedley Butler
John Jacob Astor
Little Big Horn
Shaka Zulu
March on Selma
Stonewall Riots
Watts Riots
Mike Lindell
Pro-Choice and Pro-Life groups
Hattie Caraway

Not just a boxer, but the pioneer of todays loudmouth arrogant sports "personalities." Not to mention a draft dodger.

There are plenty of other people to put on a coin before the sports floodgates open. How about vice-presidents? Inventors? Teachers?

Eh, probably not. Sports is what this world is really all about.

Yes, I know, dead thread.

If there were other sports heroes to consider for commemorative coins, here are my entries:

Ted Williams (the best last hitter)
Satchel Paige (one of the best pitchers ever)

I could go on with baseball players, but here's an interesting one:

Michael Phelps

He is the most decorated Olympian ever and holds other associated records, as well.

I like where you're going with it, and in all honesty Barry Bonds.

I love Ted Williams all time great for sure, and as a man and what he did he has my vote, but Bonds from a pure baseball perspective was better.

Dpon't get me wrong TW is an all time great and right up there with the best, top 3 even with Ruth and Bonds, but no one took over games like Bonds did since Ruth. And I am a huge TW fan and what he did was tremendous

The question must be in reference to individuals who helped shape our history, preferably for the better.

In this instance, I think Ali would qualify.

He was a draft dodger and his fame encouraged others to participate in the same violent activity that literally gave him brain damage. The world is not a better place for his example. I'd think that he would specifically not qualify based on either reason.

The Muhammad Ali Commemorative Coin Act was introduced in January 2017 and was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services where it has remained. At this point, it is unlikley the bill will pass.

Forward Federal and Corporate Whistle Blowers on commemorative coins. Every generation needs heroes and role models to emulate.

There will be stiff competition for the 2020 finalists.

Ali will be duking it out against Kennedy, the Carson Cit Mint, the pilgrims of Plymouth, the fabled Mayflower, and WWII for the honors of 2020.

My money is on 75th anniversary of the end of WWII (which I support) and Kennedy (though I don't think we need and would prefer CC, Plymouth, or Mayflower).

I would buy the Bugs Bunny. A Warner Bros. series. Fritz Freling, Mel Blanc with a character next to them. I think cartoons changed society for the better. Everyone should laugh or at very least smile. I choose Bugs bc that rabbits cartoons are a joyous memory for most who watched. Oh yeah. He's my favorite and there's that.

Some mint somewhere will have those... just a matter of time (if not already). And I can almost guarantee you that there are Looney Toons coins out there.
