It's been mentioned on a couple of other threads so figured it's better to give it its own. Anyone plan on picking one ( or two) up. Similar set up as the Rocketship- 50k product limit and HH limit of two the first day, and we know how that one turned out.

I have no clue why the Mint would supposedly make sets for young collectors and then put a mintage limit of 50k on them...I guess to make sure none ever get into the hands of these young collectors...just seeing the HH limit of two means they know EXACTLY where they will go.

With that said, I am gonna pass on this one for a couple of reasons. None of the coins are unique (makes sense for this set) and the only value to be had is grading them as being "from the set" the cost of which will be prohibitive (over $200).

US Mint: Next time leave off the mintage limits. Yes you will sell FAR fewer sets but they will end up where they should end up.

I am reposting my question from a different topic since it is about this set. Anyone have any idea?

In the specification on the back of the package for the planchet it says the diameter is .738 inch while the cent is .750 inch. When they mint the coin does it expand the size of the planchet, or do you think this planchet is not the actual planchets that are used to make cents?

I think you are correct in your assumption about the diameter expanding when the coin is struck, but based on this article...

...I would think the opposite is the case. But then the penny isn't reeded.

I picked up two. They arrived today and I must say, I am pleasantly surprised. The OGP is pretty impressive for something aimed at kids... heavy paper stock on the insert and quality printing all around.

As you know, it comes with 3 2019 uncirculated coins -- nickel, dime, cent (mine are all D) and a cent planchet. These are in thumbbuster-style folder slots on the left fold of the trifold set. One of my nickels was loose in the shipping box, but didn't seem to have been damaged, so I popped it right back in (handling with clean hands by the edges, thank you). Also included are 3 2019 proof coins -- Native American dollar, Kennedy half, and Lowell quarter. These are in capsules in a flip-up page on the center fold so you can see the reverse. The right fold has folder-style slots for the remaining 4 2019 quarter designs and a plastic magnifying glass.

The text is pretty informative and a good start for anyone getting into the hobby. It explains what uncirculated and proof coins are and how they are made. The insert has some puzzles and a decent run-down on the process of how a coin is made, from Congress to distribution.

Of course in this set we have to deal with the (IMHO) lame "Mighty Minters". But I guess they're starting to grow on me. A little.

If I need a break from doing taxes of the next couple of days I'll try to post some pics.
