Thanks Ben and allranger...I'm glad it was helpful..

Spot on Bob! Top of the class!

Its worth knowing these 4 rulers constitute probably 98% of the auctions on ebay and the like...So if you come across one that doesn't fit these 4 you've invariably got yourself a slightly rarer coin!

If you guys are interested I can start to post identification pages of each individual ruler..giving detailed breakdowns and historical facts...?
I'll wait and see if there is any interest...? Let me know.....Paul

Paul, I would find it helpful. I have a huge interest in Indian coins but am hampered by the lack on information available in English. I have two of these coins, one I have tentatively identified as being "Didda Rani." I would like to know what I am looking for to expand out my collection. I find the red marks on the coins identifying what you should be looking at very helpful.

Here's a recent upgrade of Kalasa (1063-1089)...19mm - 5.76 grams

One of the more common rulers in this series but a real challange to find one with a full obverse legend.
Ancient-Kashmir-Coinage
This one has nice detail even showing some of the facial features.
An easy coin to identify with that 'KA' symbol always to the left..

Thanks Bob!.....
Considering how common this rulers coins are, believe it or not, its actually been quite difficult to find a coin with a full legend showing that elusive 'RA' at the end coupled with nice detail....So very pleased to have ticked this box!....Paul

@echizento...Ron I don't know if it's possible to change the title of this thread to 'Ancient Kashmir coinage'?...It would be more appropriate now?...Thanks

Last year I decided to extend this series from its Hindu origins spreading out into the Muslim take over and beyond.
A goal I've set myself (Oh no not another!) is to link the Hindu rulers as chronologically close as possible to the first Muslm Sultan...At this moment in time I have a Jagadeva 1199-1213 linked to a Zain-ul-abdin 1418-1470.
A span of 205 years! I'll see what I can do...
Ancient-Kashmir-Coinage

The last Hindu ruler I possess is of Jaga Deva (see above) who died in 1213 AD...Over the next 100 years or so Kashmir went into a state of turmoil, decline and chaos...Subsequent Hindu rulers (see list below) became increasingly corrupt, less influencial and unable or unwilling to defend their borders from the ensuing Muslim threat. This allowed the inevitable ingression of Islam into Kashmir with many Hindus converting to the new faith. Most of these later rulers had no real power and were basically puppet figures for the nobility, dignitaries and the ever increasing influence of Islam.....Some of them were even ousted from Kashmir altogether!
I will continue to collect these coins as and when they surface but these later rulers are really difficult to find!...
Jagadeva 1199-1213
Rajadeva 1213-1235
Samgramadeva 1235-1252
Ramadeva 1252-1273
Laksmandadeva 1273-1286
Simhadeva 1286-1301
Suhadeva 1301-1320
Rincana 1320-1323
Udyanadeva 1323-1338
Queen Kotarani 1338-1339
The last Hindu ruler of Kashmir was Queen Kotarani who was killed by her Muslim minister Shah Mirza in 1339. He then took control, taking the title of 'Shams ud din shah' and became the first 'true' Muslim ruler of Kashmir starting the 'Shah Mir' Dynasty which ran from 1339 AD through to 1561 AD.
Shams ud din shah 1339-1342 AD
Jamshed 1342-1344 AD
Alau ud din 1344-1355 AD
Shahab ud din 1355-1373 AD
Qutub ud din 1373-1389 AD
Sikandar Butshikan 1389-1413 AD
Ali Shah 1413-1418 AD
As far as I know no coins are accredited to any of these first 7 muslim rulers..? But I'm all ears!...(Maybe Ali Shah?)

The first accredited coin of a Kashmir Sultan that I know of was the younger son of Sikander Butshikan his name was 'Shahi Khan' and was to become the eighth sultan of Kashmir. He then took the title Zain-ul-abdin and ruled from 1418-1470 AD. Also known as Bud-shah 'The great king', a learned and fundamentally peaceful man who loved literature, art and music but was also aware of the importance in protecting his borders, continually sending armies to quell any small uprising that occurred and even retaking and suppressing the fractuous areas of Ladakh, Baltistan and Ohind, areas that his grandfather Sikandar Butshikan had conquered previously.

One thing that's quite appealing to me is that these Muslim rulers had copper and silver coinage...Problem is the silver can be quite expensive! So I'll stick with the coppers at the moment...

Anyhow here's the first coin of which I have two showing different aspects of the text...
Help with the written text would be most appreciated...
Kashmir Sultan - Zain-ul-abdin - 1 Kaserah (1418-1470 AD) 5.80gr/20.20mm diameter.
Obverse..A horizontal band with an ornate knot separates the text..
Above the band is written Al-sultan al-a'zam (Supreme Sultan)
Below the band is written the Sultans name 'Zain-ul-abdin'.
Reverse..Apparently written the place it was struck (Kashmir) The month and the year..

Well, there goes Paul down another rabbit hole.

Neat new direction - looking forward to following the expansion of the series.

Thanks Bob...
Its been really interesting reading up on this era..
These coins are actually more difficult to find than I initially thought especially with readable legends.
They can be quite well worn, struck heavily offset or a mix of both..But the main criteria I have is that the Sultans name must be identifiable....

Kashmir Sultan coinage had its own weight standards unlike other Sultans.
Copper coins..
The Kaserah. ranged from 5-6 grams.Approx 20mm diameter.
Half Kaserah ranged from 2-3 grams.Approx 16mm diameter.
Silver coins..
The Sasnu weighed around 6.2 grams roughly square.

Next up is Hasan Shah AD 1472-1484..(AH 876-889)
He was the grandson of Zain-ul-abdin..
A Sultan who was a great lover of music maintaining 1200 musicians in his court at all times. But whom also had a serious drinking problem and was heavily addicted to strong alchoholic drinks.
His copper coins are very easy to distinguish from the other rulers as the horizontal band that seperates the text on the obverse has a very simple non-decorative circular knot....This circle can be large, small and can sometimes have a raised dot in the centre...See below..
Ancient-Kashmir-Coinage
Here are my two examples....
1st coin .....approx 20.00mm / 5.55 gr
2nd coin......approx 18.65mm / 5.40 gr
Ancient-Kashmir-Coinage

I've had a great deal of assistance from drnsreedhar and other experts in the readings of the text. Now because of their help can at least read the obverse of these coins. The reverse generally names the mint "Zarb Kashmir" and the date written out in words in Arabic but are generally in a very crude style.
Reads..Zarb Kashmir (Struck at Kashmir) / Fi Shahur sanh (In the months of the year) / tis'in / wa samanmayah (and eight hundred)...From the examples on 'zeno' his coins had a frozen date AH874 ?

Here's the slowly growing set....
