Serendipitous find. Good advice from others here too.

I would add that a search of the immediate area where you found the albums for any loose coins that may have fallen out may be in order. If you can do it without disturbing any mold, that is.

Oblique lighting is a good way to search. Lay a strong flashlight level on the surface to be searched and pivot the beam along and around. Keep yourself behind the beam and as low to the surface as practical. Even very small items often pop out this way.

Good luck and don't forget the gloves and mask for safety.
Rest in Peace

... wet them with bleach to kill the mold ...

Not so much.

Google { does bleach kill mold? }

What bleach will do is make the mold spores less likely to leave the surface of the albums as you handle them, but sprinkling with plain or soapy water will do that, too.

Cheers,

Nice finds! You need to get those coins in acetone, quick! Throw away those coin albums, and leave the coins in acetone for a while. I've tried searching through my house, couldn't find much old coins except a few 1940-1950's coins, and also some old banknotes that my parents forgot about for decades. It sure helps if you live in an old house. You could also try metal detecting your backyard if you live in an old house.

As I predicted, he didn't come back. I bet he dumped the coins, and they're already sold.

After reading several posts suggesting I soak the coins in 100% acetone I went straight to Home Depot and purchased some. Not knowing how to store the coins after the cleaning I decided to research some more so once the coins were cleaned I could store them properly. The acetone was never opened, the coins went back in a box and there they have sat since my first post. Actually I found the coins in 2012 and didn't join this forum until 2017. I recently found a small treasure box in my keepsake box. There I found some old coins I put there back in the late 80's. Now I'm motivated to pull the coin box out of the garage and start the process. So, no thecoinguy1964, I didn't dump them. As far as the mold goes, I've worked construction since 1980 and have run into all kinds of nasty things. While I understand there are people who are highly mold sensitive I am not one of them...I'll be fine. Now....onto the coins!
