I often scan the proofs and sets on ebay looking for varieties. Tonight, I spotted this--admittedly a fuzzy picture. What caught my eye was how close the "AM" was together. On the normal Wide AM proof, the spacing of "AME" is roughly equal. From what I can tell, the FG also juts out farther than I expect to see.

Yeah--the pic is crummy, but just for fun...what do you see? Cast your vote now and I'll update when it arrives.

You know what? You have me convinced. I've been going back and forth between your picture and the PCGS coinfacts page, and it's looking pretty good. I forget who told me about the placement of the A in STATES as a marker for close vs Wide AM (spruett maybe?), but yours looks good there too. How much was it?

Yeah..I don't usually bother when pictures are like this, but having found a few already...it looks to be worth taking a chance. It's in a clad quarter set for $8. But we'll see

Are you able to flip them relatively easily, or are you stacking a roll of 1999-S CAM proofs? I'm surprised that PCGS values them less than the 1999 WAM. You'll just have to hope to find a PR70 to join their Pop 1 $10,000 specimen!

I haven't sold any yet. The last one I found on ebay has a corrosion spot, so it's value isn't high. Still not complaining for $3

WAMs and CAMs are easy to distinguish with the naked eye and even with the bad seller pic, it certainly looks like a Close AM. The placement of the A in STATES looks correct. I really can't make out the FG placement at all from the pic. If it does turn out to be one, then $8 is a steal!

If it gets a PR70 then I'll be very jealous.

Druu, it probably wasn't me that mentioned that to you.
My guess would be cwb.

Yes, I have also made my own diagnostic pictures from coins I own. Of course, the seller's pic has nowhere the detail, but how do you vote on this one?

It's about as bad an auction pic can get and still take that chance.

Must be a typo--it's pretty clear what variety it is. Thanks for all the diagnostic pics...I'll know for sure when it arrives.

For some commentary on these pictures--I find ALL CAPS a bit hard on the eyes; it's also the internet equivalent of shouting. As one who designs engineering diagrams for the purpose of instruction, I find that distilling a diagram to the core components, while reducing visual clutter at all possible, gets the rest response from our viewers. --just my $.02
