My simple question is: Which one of us members bought 1 for our collection (who's collecting this coin)? AND anyone of you guys buying more than 1, because of the 'key' mintage potential?

I didn't order from the Mint, but I did pick one up via ebay auction not too long after the release that was graded by PCGS as PR69DCAM. Probably was someone's hoped for 70 that came back as a 69 and they were flipping it to get their $ back. You don't see them that often on ebay. I guess that isn't too surprising due to the low current mintage and the fact they're still available from the Mint (currently at $417.6, pre-issue was $400.45 I believe). The last two PCGS PR69DCAMs that I see sold on ebay went for $518 (BIN) and $460 (auction, 7 bids). That last price is pretty much what you'd pay to get one from the Mint and get it PCGS graded (and if you're really lucky it might come back as PR70DCAM), but I think someone must have really wanted this coin to pay $518 (BIN) for a 69.

I'm not sure if it's a frenzy or not, but maybe the $5 UNCs are starting an end of year surge?
The latest Mint production report indicates that sales increased +110 from 2252 to 2362. That's +4.7% in a week, which is a pretty substantial move for this coin IMHO. If this trend continues for the rest of the year, the mintage might just break through 3,000, which would still be a new low mintage for the modern $5 UNC commems.
The proof version isn't fairing any better. With current sales of 6,683, it's also on track to set a new low mintage for the modern $5 proof commems.

Sales of the $5 UNC were up another 118 this past week. About 9.2% of the total sales have occurred in the past 2 weeks. The sales trend is definitely showing end of year buying for this low mintage coin. With 5 more weeks before sales are closed, this is still looking like it could end up at a mintage of around 3,000, well below the current low mintage of 5,150 for last year's National Park Service coin. I only see 2 ebay sales of this coin in the last 3 months. Both were for PCGS MS70 First Strikes and each went for $1,000.

Thanks BadDog for sharing. The added graph (the visual component of the post) is very helpful.

I have been picking up the $5 commemorative gold coins over the past few years, might have to pony up this one for a personal Christmas gift.

Isn't there typically a surge in gold commemorative sales as the year winds down?
I have the proof. May elect to get the uncirculated if funds are available - I really do like the design.

I can certainly understand that. As well as "get 'em before they're gone" and for Christmas gifts.
While the delta relative to existing sales is large, we're not talking many units from a per capita perspective.

Wow. BU is showing sold out at the mint when I checked today. Proof and 3 coin set is still available.

Combined authorized mintage is 50,000. As of the last production report, the combined sales were less than 20% of this authorization.
I guess the UNC sold so poorly that the mint decided to sell the stock they had and not strike anymore.
They'll probably do the same thing with the proofs. Once the on-hand stock is sold (if it's sold that is) then that will be it.
Looks like this issue will easily be the key date, unless some future issue sells even more poorly. The UNC is at about half the mintage of the former UNC key (the 2015 Parks Service) and the PRF is at about half the mintage of the former proof key (the 2015 Mark Twain).
Hope this isn't a trend where each new year's issue becomes the new key date due to poor sales.

So, what's the final mintage? Where is the current market trend right now?
