I'm of the opinion that all toning is just a form of environmental damage. No thank you!

I am not a toning fan either, but I like this coin. Kind of red, white, and blue stripes make it patriotic. But I wouldn't pay crazy money for it.

Still amazes me that this is a 67.

67 is a bit of a default grade they use on widely toned ASEs and yes the toned ASE market is very strong at the moment and can be seen with stiff premiums across many venues. As far as the toning it looks fine, ASEs can pick up wild colors and they can pick them up quickly depending on the environment they are in. Some will tone very quickly others won't.

That is crazy stupid. I might pay a small premium for it. If the toning was really attractive then maybe $100 or so. Those people need to have their head examined

Quote: Those people need to have their head examined Why? It's their money and their collections why is everyone criticizing them for buying what they love?

Quote: doesn't look like a natural toning! I agree. It looks intentionally done. Quote: It's their money and their collections why is everyone criticizing them for buying what they love? There are things that I like (love is a strong word for material things) and have the money to buy, but I won't because the price is above the effort that it took me to earn the money. I look at it this way. A fool and his money are soon parted. Good for the seller. The buyer doesn't know the value of the money he has.

Quote: I look at it this way. A fool and his money are soon parted. Good for the seller. The buyer doesn't know the value of the money he has. That's incredibly judgemental and deeming to toned collectors. What actually happened was people with disposable income who could afford to spend that much started bidding against each other for something they would like and enjoy, the same thing that happens in the majority of cases with toned coins with the right look. The people that play at that level of premiums in the toned market aren't the fools they are being presented as. Everyone needs to remember that unless you're a Morelan/Pogue/Sunnywood ect there are plenty of people who could say the same about your collection and how you collect. I'm sure no one would appreciate being told their collection was because they were fools. I don't play at that level in the toning market and I never will. But people calling them fools and saying they need to have their head checked because they aren't spending their money how you want them too, or collecting in a way that pleases you is asinine. Did that one sell a little high, maybe maybe not but strong premiums for the right look have been supported for some time on various venues. Saying something isn't for you is fine, saying they're fools that don't understand the value of money is trying to dictate how people should collect

Using your logic, people can't be foolish when spending money. I maintain that they can be and many are. My opinion is that spending that kind of money on a modern (likely artificially) toned coin is foolish. BTW, I don't care how/what they collect. Plenty of people collect things that I wouldn't spend my money on, but they don't do it in a foolish manner.

The toning is a little odd. I know the seller sure made out!

I like toned coins, but I question whether a less than 30 year old coin could look like that unless it was "helped along." That being said, it was sold at auction and there were 17 unique bidders on this item so if you believe that a commodity is worth what the market will bear then I guess it's worth what it sold for since there was an underbidder who was close to the sale price (assuming there was no shilling going on).
