When I started collecting coins as a young boy, I used to go to a long-closed LCS with a friend from school. The coin dealer had a junk box with coins for a shilling (5p) each. One day after school my friend and I went to the shop and there were only about a dozen coins left in the junk box. The dealer emptied the box, divided the coins into two piles and gave half to me and half to my friend. One of the coins in my batch was this poor old 1734 George II halfpenny - and it's still in my collection!

@NumisRob ... Perchance, this early copper was once nailed to a doorway, a so-called witches' coin, intended to ward off evil spirits. That looks like an early hole. Let us know if it works!

I can honestly say that I haven't been troubled by witches since owning this coin! Funnily enough, I used to have a 1938 Canadian nickel with a very similar hole in it. Regrettably, I disposed of it by spending it in Toronto in 2004!

Another grotty George II halfpenny - perhaps someone used this 1747 one as a button?

I have a very good example of a vandalized coin in my collection. It is a otherwise beautiful 1881 CC Morgan, but someone put a counterstamp (the letter O) right on the cheek! The coin is out to ANACS, so I don't have a pic.

It's quite common to find English coins of King Charles I with scratches across the portrait - presumably done during and after the Civil War by opponents of the King! This is my Charles I Tower Mint halfcrown:

@NumisRob .... Those scratches look to be a cross and then some. Interesting to contemplate what animosity some onetime bearer of this half crown harbored against Charles. Coin damage can often be done willy-nilly, with no meaningful intent. This one suggests otherwise. Then too, the coin was made in the Tower Mint ... a most notorious, often gruesome environment. This historic coin stirs many thoughts; this, as does its damaged surface. As such, a pic of the flip-side would be welcomed, even if it's undamaged.

Who knew 20 years later this person would have their wish granted?
