Solved a puzzle for me with this coin IMP.

I have owned a battered little bronze which I have long thought to be a limes issue, the only match I could find was your coin type, this post has just confirmed what I have.

Whilst the references refer to the check markings as being armour this is far from conclusive. The check marks could as easily be a representation of the wrinkled skin of the elephant.

Here is the mosaic of Africa from the Piazza Armerina villa that was used in a discussion on this topic elsewhere a few years ago.
