The inconsistencies in the rim denticles have me a bit concerned as does the weakness of the eagle's left wing in some of the pic. The denticles (like in the 2nd to last pic) go from being beads to actual denticles to the rim being part of the denticles. Other small things also seem off - but could be photographic in nature. I am not a Morgan expert, but do own a Chinese Morgan fake I deliberately bought just for studying.
I am hoping I am wrong and that these are legit coins.

I believe you are seeing lighting issues from different angles. I have not seen anything suspicious under magnification. I plan on taking it to my dealer Monday if I am off work to get his opinion (especially for pl vs dmpl if I send them to PCGS) my gut is saying they're all genuine. Granted the Chinese are getting good at counterfeits, it's very difficult to do die clashes, die polishing, etc. I will double check their weights shortly. As you say your no expert on Morgan's, I consider myself to have an above average knowledge on these coins and I know dates like 79s, 80s, 81s, 82s aren't uncommon to have mirror like fields due to mint officials polishing the dies to get more life from them. I appreciate the input, and I await others opinions.

They look legit to me. I'd give them 63/64's and call them semi-dmpl's.
When you said "dirt cheap" just how "dirt cheap" were they?

Seriously?! That first 80-s looks like 65DMPL to me, and those literally go for upwards of half a grand or more. That's a little fishy. No - that's super fishy. Were they an auction? If these are real, then you got one of the best deals I've seen...

Yes they were all from an ebay auction. I got them cheap cause it was the middle of the day, and I bought a 1928 S peace from them and that was graded by my dealer ms63/64, I got that for $40. I just weighed them all at my precious metals place and my own scale and they all check out at 26.73 grams and 0.86 Troy oz which is the weight for Morgan's. All of them are non magnetic which is another good sign. Here's a pic of reeding which is also consistent  Edited by Imthealphaomega

I am intending to get them graded next time my buddy submits to PCGS. I am getting 3 more from the same seller probably Monday the 1886 I got looks like a 66 maybe pl or dmpl, the photos got washed out.

1) MS-65 PL.
2) It might make MS-65 PL.
3) MS-64.
4) And I am thinking MS-64 from those pictures.

Grades are in. I scored on these coins. I am so happy! I had about $300 invested in all 10, plus $220 for grading. So roughly $520. I will make my money back and then some just by selling a few of these. I plan on keeping a few for myself. Check out these results.  Wasn't expecting a 65 on the 1884 and 1878 S both are worth over $250 per alone. Was disappointed in the 1880 O since it was in an NGC ms62 (oh well). 1890 also looked like a 64, but I'm not complaining. Definitely buying more from this seller after also scoring an ms63 1928 S Peace dollar which I had $60 total invested into it and it's now worth over $400 |
