British large pennies aren't exactly new to me since I have a collection of them from 1888 until they stopped minting them.

However, today while looking through an old box in which I kept coins I discovered two British pennies I didn't even know I had. Both were 1940, and both would be about AU -- still fairly shiny, even after 65 years.

I have no idea when I got them, but am guessing they haven't seen the light of day for at least two decades!

From 1888 until when? That would be a pretty impressive set of coins wouldn't it? I thought about doing the same thing with the Australian large cents but still on the drawing board at this time.

Terry:

I'd dig the coins out and look, but they are way back in a closet.

When did the UK go decimal? Was it 1967? Can't remember.

Anyway, I really like the large British pennies, and one of these days I would like to start working backward from 1888.

That would be quite a bunch of big pennies then wouldn't it? I need to pick something out and go with it but the choices are overwhelming and I am working on so much right now it would almost be foolish to start a new series. That may be all the reason I need to start!!!

You know, "foolish" is the right word. I have started so many collections I will never finish! But then, I can still be happy to think that out of three kids, and six grandkids, at least a few will collect, and after I have "bought the farm," they will have a good start on collections, and hopefully finish some I have started.

UK went decimal in 1971. Last year for pre-decimal was 1970.

To get every penny pre 1888 would cost a small fortune, as they went back many hundred years.
