I went to a coin show last weekend and didn't see
anything interesting until I saw the ancient coins.
I wound up getting a nice Constantine follis and I might be hooked.
I am interested in history and would enjoy collecting
ancient Roman coins.
The local coin shops don't carry ancients,so I am
thinking of ebay, but I am very concerned about
buying replica coins.

Do you think its OK to buy them off of ebay
and can anybody suggest reputable sellers?
Thanks for the advise.

There are plenty of sellers of fakes on ebay, and China isn't one of the major sources at the moment; Eastern Europe (esp. Bulgaria) is still the main source, with Canada a popular go-between.

ebay sellers to stay away from: see this thread over on the FORVM forum.

Most of my ancient coins I've bought off local dealers, auctions and coins shows, so I don't have too much experience to offer re: mail-order ancients. I've purchased ancients and mediaeval from Civitas Galleries and heard only good things about them, and the owner of FORVM (linked above) is a well-respected ancients dealer.

I have purchased many ancient coins from E-bay, and there is nothing to worry about if you buy from reputable dealers. There are many great sellers on E-bay, and I hate to mention any, for fear of slighting others, but here are a few that have been around for a while-- ancientauctionhouse.com, antiquarica, cameleoncoins, and s*p*q*r

If you are buying late Roman bronzes, which are cheap and plentiful, you do not have to worry so much about fakes. For example, on E-bay this week, there are over 150 hits for Constantine, and all are authentic. Fakes do surface, though, so caveat emptor. As you become more familiar with what ancient coins should look like, you will start to realize what they should not look like.

I would be very nervous about buying them from ebay unless they're from a dealer I already know.

Not only fakes, but you find many tooled coins on ebay.
It is really a risky place to buy ancients as a beginner.
There are many good, highly professional dealers on Vcoins.

I would be very comfortable buying ancient coins off ebay. As long as the seller has a good reputation, and as long as there are good photos of the coin, I would be happy to bid on a coin I want. The benefit of ebay is that you can get coins much cheaper than your neighborhood dealer sells them for.

I too would be very cautious of buying ancients on ebay without recommendations.
I just bought 3 there, and that's because Swamperbob was selling them--someone I trust here on CCF.
I think all his ancients on auction have concluded.

I agree with Victor, there are many excellent dealers on E-bay.
