The returns for this set continue.
Initial sales figure: 217,514 As of 8 Oct sales figure: 197,133
So, about 10% of the initial sales have now been returned.

Quote: Seeing some BIN SP70 sets as low as $150. A lot of auctions ending lower than that. Yup...prices have been all over the place. Yesterday a BIN went for $182.75 and another a few hours later for $132.50 (auction)

That seems like a lot. Wonder if the EU finish wasn't to their liking or if it was the bulk buyers realizing the flip potential is no longer there?

Could they possibly be making money on these? Isn't the cost alone just to grade the coins close to $300?

I read that dealer bulk grading only costs $8-10/coin

I believe the returns are not from collectors, but are either from speculators who were hoping to flip the sets for a quick profit or from dealers hoping the sets would be a hot item.
If the sets are a quick sell out at the Mint, then the secondary demand can be strong.
This set wasn't as hot as these folks hoped and so the sets are being returned.
Once the Mint's return window expires for these early orders, the returns will likely drop off.

Well....I will go with that theory for the "early orders" which were returned when the market didn't fall in love with the set...but...this set went on sale two and a half months ago...and the return window is 7 days after receipt

I guess I should have looked at little closer at the sales trend data, rather than just the first reported and last reported sales. Here's the actual trend The sales have actually been increasing after the initial returns from the speculators.

So they initially sold out, got a bunch of returns, and are now slowly increasing sales on those returns.

I believe so.
Like Foxwoods Man said, the US Mint has a 7 day return policy (decreased from 30 days back in Feb '09) and my guess is that the delayed dip indicates how long it takes the Mint to process those returns and have them show up in the sales figures.
