Do you count the coins in rolls before leaving the bank? I picked up a few rolls of halves and a few rolls of dollars at the bank today. One roll of halves was ripped and taped. So, I checked the count at the bank and it was short one half. The dollars were rolled in customer type wrappers. I did not even think of checking them. Unfortunately, later at home, I discovered that one of three rolls of dollars was short one coin. I always try to move the line along making the exchange of funds quickly. But, in the future, I will likely count the coins in dollar rolls that are not boxed. Do other members regularly check rolls at the bank or getting shorted a coin or two just a cost of roll hunting?

Normally if I get a customer rolled coin I don't count it as I know the risk/reward of getting them. I don't want the tellers to stop providing me these customer rolled coins as most banks normally don't exchange them for that exact reason.
Good luck with your future rolls :)

I don't coin roll hunt much, mostly when I pickup coins to spend in the various Project 100K threads. I have only been short a couple of coins, and I considered it a convenience fee. After you get your coin rolls, you can probably go to another counter or desk to count the coins if you want. Depending on how many rolls you get, that may take a lot of time. If you count the coins before leaving the teller's window, that would be a quick path to the bank stopping the practice of letting you get coin rolls, unless you are a business customer.

Thank you for your input. I always try to be polite and courteous. Otherwise, this will be a short lived activity

I don't ever recall counting in my 40 years of roll hunting, of course if I'm picking up several grand in one day in hand-rolls, I'd really hold up the line ")
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

They already look as if I'm speak French when I ask for the rolls. No need to make it any more awkward.

A quick tap of the rolls upright with other same denomination rolls will quickly tell you if a roll is short.
It's actually very easy to tell if a roll is less than it should be.
Try it at home before heading for your bank.

Short-looking rolls can contain old, worn coins. At my bank, a woman turned in a short-looking roll, and the teller was suspicious and opened it up. It had 50 worn Indian Head cents. The woman then changed her mind about depositing them.

I always tried to keep my rolls "clean":
1. Break open the first roll, search it, and keep the rejects in a swap pile.
2. Do one roll at a time, replacing each keeper with a coin from the swap pile.
3.Once finished, roll it back up. You don't ever have to count them.

I was shorted pretty bad (50-100 bucks) on rolls in a sealed box before. Told the bank (knowing it was a coin company problem, not theirs), and was rewarded with being told for liability they wouldn't sell me any more.
Yay!

Same here Finn. I keep a clear baggie of reload coins. Shorting a roll is not in my genes. I'm sure there are people out there dumping short rolls. I think we should be aware that tellers are sometimes giving us the short rolls (either honest mistakes or to balance out the dishonest hunters).
