jbuck posted a cartoon that mentioned tin whiskers as a problem in physics in July. I tried to quote it, but was not successful.

Did you know that is a real problem in electroplating? When tin is plated over copper without a nickel barrier layer between, an intermetallic tin/copper alloy forms and grows single crystals for relatively huge distances. These whiskers can cause short circuits on printed circuits and cause failures in components. Another factor contributing to whisker growth is stress in the base material caused by mechanical forming after plating.

I remember one company pushing a tin-silver alloy to replace pure tin. Tin-lead alloys also work if lead can be tolerated.
