King John Hammered Penny? - Coin Community Forum

ajpl677 New Member United Kingdom 21 Posts	Posted 07/25/2017 08:17 am Hi all, Found this half cut hammered coin on Saturday. I am not very good with identifying hammered coins, and I am trying to learn. Am I right in thinking it is a short cross coin? Of King John? Looking at the reverse, I can see a cross in the inscription, but unsure if that is a mint mark. What is the orientation of these pennies? Would the cross be at the bottom? Could it be a Vb rather than a Vaii as it looks like a cross pattee rather than a pommee on the reverse? or am I reading it wrong in Spinks Coins of England. Appreciate your help. Coopertron5000 Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 516 Posts	Posted 07/26/2017 09:23 am Andy, I would classify this as Vaii - you mention the cross prommee and cross pattee, there are exceptions. The main differentiation between Va and Vb is the direction of the S on the obverse. Va - reversed s Vb - Normal S Which if you look closely at bottom of the obverse you can see the lower half of a reverse S. You can then sub classify to Va2 Va1 - no pellets in the hair curls Va2 - pellets in all or some of the hair curls. I can see a pellet in the lower right hair curl. Moneyer is Milis/Miles - you only have the first 3 letters so could be either. Mint is Winchester. I don't find spink overly useful for identification, but do use it for reference numbers. If youre getting into the short cross series seriously I would recommend 'The short cross coinage 1180-1247' by Christopher Wren. Hope this helps. Report this Post to the Staff
