That's funny Tootallious. That's exactly how I've found many of my error coins; chips, cracks, struck thru's, BIE, slight off-center strikes and even a clipped planchet. They were in Whitman Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters and half's folders for years and I never know it. Back in the 60's these anomalies would have been the last thing on my mind. I was just looking for dates and filling holes.

I remember when I was a courios little boy in the late 60's and early 70's, my grandfather would catch me looking through his coin collection. He would tell me that "some day this collection will be yours" and I would get all excited about the thought of it all being mine. My grandfather passed in 1979 and the coins went to my mother and I had long forgotten about them. In Febuary of this year my dear mother passed and a week later my sister handed me a big box. Under a bunch of other centimetal items there was this big metal box that I recognized as the box that my grandfather kept his coin collection in. Taped to the top of the box was the key to unlock it. After the flood of tears had passed I opened that box and in it was a note that read " I told you that some day this will be all yours" ! Second flood of tears.... I finally finished going through all of the loose coins, some in 2x2's , some in old match boxes, and some in plastic bags. It's been a fun trip down memory lane thus far, and now I'm starting to go through all if the folders. I'll post any worth while finds. Thank you every one for helping me understand what I have and teaching me what I need to know Sorry about the long reply.

When my grandfather was looking through the neighbors window is when I was looking at his coins. After his death, my grandmother would catch me looking through the neighbors window and say, "did you learn that from your grandfather?"

I agree Mark! In fact I try to instil what I learned from my grandfather into my grandson. Like closing the lid on the toilet. My grandfather would say to me "if your grandmother falls into the toilet in the middle of the night because you didn't put the lid down, it's going to be your butt in deep water! Not mine!". Of course he didn't use the word butt, or water!
