Yemen Y 5.5, dated 1358. My example is rather worn:

Nice coins. I think I have some modern coins from Yemen, but none of these. Have taken bites at those fun pentagonal pieces on ebay, but always lose by a few bucks.

I have very little from the Mutawakkilite Kingdom -- just this 1/80 riyal from 1961 (AH 1381):

And here is another of the coin posted above (although I have the Gregorian date listed as 1962):

Great coin to post @j1m! Much like @finn, I've got nothing close, but am enjoying what others are posting.

Quote: (although I have the Gregorian date listed as 1962): According to one calendar converter, AH1381 starts on June 14, 1961 and ends June 4, 1962. Another converter has AH1381 starting on June 15, 1961 and ending on June 4, 1962. It looks like the year with greatest overlap is 1961. Maybe these coins were made in late AH1381, meaning 1962?

I would just assume the coins were struck all throughout AH1381, meaning it would be impossible to know the exact Gregorian year any one example was struck. So, with 1381 being pretty well split between the two years, I guess that means both 1961 and 1962 would be correct.

Quote: I think specifying what would count as approximate when a challenge coin is posted (as you did) is also a good idea. It can vary so much from coin to coin that it makes sense for the challenger to designate what counts as an approximate match. If the coin is tied to the reign of someone, it should include the regnal years. If no monarch is involved, then a span of 20 years seems reasonable, meaning within 10 years on either side. I haven't been around here too long but, this has to be one of the most dorky topics and I like it! No shame. Now, if I could actually contribute something...

This one is a stretch for an approximate match (especially the denomination), but just for fun, here is a 1943 US dime.

Haven't seen any new entries for a while; think it's time to move on? Unless January feels differently, I think Oriole wins this round (country and denomination, but not date), followed by a tie between Pepactonius and Joseph7420 (country but not denomination or date), followed by bd251 (date only).

It has been a little unclear as to who posts the points and declares a winner, so maybe our rule should be that the previous winner does so. So I think that January should declare the point counts and the winner, and then I will post the next challenge.
