Ok - so I've done a bunch of research over the last couple of weeks, and I currently have a list of 91 different ASE's, keeping in mind such things as uncirculated, bullion, burnished, proof, reverse proof, etc, and I know I'm still missing a number of the different iterations.... When looking at the link that Bobby offered http://goccf.com/p/us_silver_eagles/ which btw - was a great starting point, thank you) if I take an example of the 1986 ( not the proof entry ), the details have it marked as Uncirculated with a mint of Philadelphia. When referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ameri...Silver_Eagle it indicates that "Bullion Silver Eagle coins do not have mint marks and that from 1986 to 1998, they were produced at the San Francisco Mint" ( no mention of Uncirculated for that time frame ) and for Uncirculated, "From 2006 to 2008 and beginning again in 2011, the United States Mint issued a collectible uncirculated Silver Eagle coin produced at West Point (bearing the "W" mintmark). The coins are struck on specially burnished blanks..." I don't see a way to upload a file here other than an image, as I have a nice spreadsheet with what I have compiled thus far, and would love to "show it off".... One other note, I'm quickly becoming extremely interested in the history of the coinage, not to mention their intrinsic beauty... Still on the search for the complete list...... Dan |

dgubber, my list, from 1986-2017, has 83. I may be missing some obscure varieties. For 1986 (as for all years except 1995 between 1986-2005) there were only two ASE issues: proof and bullion. (1995 had two proofs and a bullion.) The CCF ASE pages should be updated to say "bullion" instead of "uncirculated" for the 1986-2005 non-proof issues. While "uncirculated" may technically be correct as an adjective to describe the bullion ASEs, it causes confusion with the Burnished/Uncirculated product that was introduced in 2006. Quote:

The coins are struck on specially burnished blanks..." This is correct. These "specially burnished blanks" ASEs are what the mint sells to collectors directly as "Uncirculated". See this link to the 2017 Uncirculated ASE as an example. These burnished have a mint mark and are not the same as bullion, and, again, were not introduced until 2006. All you need is in the CCF ASE List, as mentioned above. With the exception of 3 of the more recent 2017 releases, it has every ASE issue. Or the Red Book (though my 2017 Red Book only lists ASEs to 2015). For a great history of ASEs, get the Mercanti book of ASEs (also mentioned above). John Mercanti is the man who designed the reverse of the ASE and was Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint for some time, so he probably knows a thing or two about it. Search for "American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program". It is available in print and digital formats. Edited by CelticKnot

The list treats all bullion as the same when there are multiple versions of those as well. |

CelticKnot. I found a few "errors" in my list, and I'm currently at 86. I included 3 line items for the ruthenium plated coins, and 2 line entries for 1999 and 2000's Bullion coins as they were minted both in PH and WP. So if I take those 5 entries out, based on you saying you have a list of 83, it appears I'm still missing a couple of entries.
Is it possible for me to post my spreadsheet here ? Other's might be able to use it as well.

If you are including after-market coins such as ruthenium plated (and that's your prerogative), the list could be endless. You could add slabbed 68's, 69's, 70's, and all the various label iterations, plated coins, coins enhanced by third parties, fantasy coins, etc. I personally lump bullion coins minted at different mints in the aftermarket category because they don't come to me direct from the mint and don't have MM's or COAs. You have to rely on a TPG slab if you want to be "certain" your coin came from a particular mint during the years they were minted at more than one location, and even that can prove to be tricky (see recent shenanigans). Your call on how to handle as you build your own list, of course. Quote:

According to American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program, 2nd Edition, bullion ASEs were produced at various mints according to the following:
1986: P,S,W
1987-1999: P
2000-2010: W
2011-2013: S,W
The 2nd Edition only goes to 2013.

The 2nd Edition only goes to 2013. The S,W combo continues today and I believe what we know of the P is 2015 and 2017 not sure about 2016 |

Mods, can we update the title of this thread to " ASE Mint Marks and Full List"? I think there's some good info in here and it might help to more easily locate it for reference when the confusing topic of ASE varieties comes up again. Thanks. |
