Hi everyone! My name is Melissa. I recently acquired a collection of old coins. I haven't even come across one from the year I was born! The oldest is a 1916 mercury head dime and the newest is a 1982 penny. I'm obviously not a collector so I have been researching values, etc. I of course went to ebay, but that has confused me. Why would someone pay thousands and thousands of dollars for a Lincoln Wheat cent when there are others for sale, same year, mint, etc. For less than a dollar? I just don't get it! I'm pretty sure I have some reasonably valuable coins, but I have no idea where to sell them or to even get an accurate valuation since ebay seems to be all over the place. I have about every denomination it would appear. Any advice and or guidance will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! #9786;

MeIJ29, you should learn where the mint marks are on the types of coins you have. Anyway, thanks for posting.

I know where all of the mint marks are. My original question was what makes a Wheat penny worth thousands versus less than a dollar? Everything from year to mint to condition appear to be the same.

Mel- there are many factors in what makes a coin valuable. For one, condition is a major part. A coin in G4 will be worth much less than a coin in MS64. Another thing is what the buyer will pay. There are many cases of high-grade common coins selling for thousands.
