The lighting is off on this... appears RB in hand. Also, does this look like reverse of 1869? Any feedback on grade is much appreciated.

Yes, this is the reverse of 1869 (Shallow N). I hope the color is quite a bit off, because the coin looks cleaned in these pics.

My grade AU53 details questionable color or cleaned, you can see wear on the feathers, hair, and the wreath ribbon.

Looks like an impaired Proof to me PF-55 details. I need to check my attribution guides.

Can you get a nice clear close up of the 7:00 position of the reverse? Looking for some die polish lines coming off the olive leaves. Looks like the bottom one is visible but want to verify.

bandsdean, hope these are clear enough... if not I'll try to get a better shot. Also, do all 1870 proofs have a shallow N or is it a design variety like on the business strike coins?

As per Rick Snow's book, all known 1870 Proofs have the shallow N although there was a lone auction many years ago that had a coin listed as the bold N. That single coin has not been located to verify its existence. With the additional close-ups I believe this coin is an impaired proof. The olive leaf on your coin appears to have the tail coming off it. If it is a proof, it is valued considerably less than its business strike counterpart. I have been wrong in the past and the above is my opinion. Take a look at some past auctions on the Heritage site searching for some 1870 Proofs. Some have strong die polishing line while most look like your coin.

I was going to say ms63rb. I see a little abrasion on the brow above the eye and another below the eye. Other than that it looks pristine. I also thought the color was weird because it looked more like CuNi than bronze, but I thought it was due to lighting. I thought it straight graded because the surfaces look original and undisturbed.

Nice coin and nice photography skills. Thanks for sharing your beautiful coin!
