I saw the Woody post so that brings up my question. I've heard of black beauty. ( Not sure ) on that are there others ? Of a color variety error. Here is a Lincoln 1961 d as an example.
Most often coin coloring happens after they leave the mint. Additives to the coin alter the color. Surroundings alter color. Storage alters colors. Cleanings/heat alter colors. Even the cello on the older mint sets will alter coins in time. Nickels can change to a blue tone. I found a 1963 cent (was still in mint cello had turned silver in color. Coin folders can alter colors. Sometimes a toned coin will be more desirable: Sometimes not. It all depends on the collector.
coop- I also believe your "TONED IN A WHITMAN ALBUM" post just solved my problem and answered my question on this thread regarding my 1944 Lincoln Cent.
