If there is a case for third party grading and slabbing of coins, this is it. I would never buy an expensive coin like the 1948 Silver dollar without TPG. There is too much risk in paying a lot of money for a coin that is possibly fake.

Compare the bid history between the pair of '48 dollars and the single one. While it's not impossible that it actually played out like that, it looks like a group of organized shills pumping up the price on some fake coins, waiting for a legitimate buyer to be fooled into confidence by the number of bids. I suspect this seller will sell a couple expensive coins and then vanish from ebay, leaving people holding what I am now reasonably sure are worthless fake coins.

The '48s sold for $1377 US, and were then relisted with the same pictures and sold for $1150 US. Interesting.

I got a refund for the 1914 50 cents I mentioned earlier in the post. Whew ! If you are looking for one, check if the 4 looks too large before buying.

Coins could very well get weird toning, but when you think about the coffee can story, what years would you expect to find in an old coffee can which is being sold in California ? I would expect the common years, not the highest value types. If the stasher was a coin collector, he would have known these were high value coins and NOT throw them in a coffee can. If he had no clue, and just saved them as silver dollars, then you would expect there would be a mixture of other dates, and NO 47's or 48's.
