I paged through this entire thread (9 pigs.) and thought for sure someone would have pictured the starred edge of a "classic" St. Gaudens gold $20. But no.....denied.

Here's a type I have wanted for a long time; a "Denarius Serratus" from the late 2nd century BC in Rome (this one 106 BC). The silver flan would be nicked while still soft and prior to striking, causing the nicks to split. This was ostensibly done to deter forgers and demonstrate the integrity of the coin--illegal fakes were rampant at the time, and some Mint officials were making official coins of sub-par purity. It didn't last long because counterfeiters figured out how to replicate these coins in bronze, then plate them.

They're your coins but I really don't like seeing them in those paper clips, Dorado.

Dorado, thanks for the response. Interestingly I have but one Liberty gold $20, and it's a 1904 as well. I've never seen the edge though as it's in a holder. I'm still waiting for someone to display the edge of a an original St. Gaudens gold $20. The one with the stars on the edge. I have one, but it's slabbed as well so I"ve never seen the edge of that one as well.
