I've done lots of study on the Canadian large cents and it's always been my opinion that the "woodies" of the Ed and Geo reigns were caused by an incomplete or improper wash of the coins after they had been struck... that's been the opinion of most, if not nearly all, of the experts that have delved into this. And the Canadian large cents were bronze, not cupro nickel .. copper(95%) and tin(4% or more), with sometimes impurities of zinc, iron, or others totaling less than 1% and no nickel. You see almost no woodies in the Vicky reign and little in the Ed reign until 1907/8 or so ... the later teens of Geo are full of them.
Rest in Peace
