The quickest way I know to tell them apart is to look at how far the date is from the rim. The small date is farther from the rim than the large date.

It is difficult to tell from your photo , but use the image below to compare your coin with.

If copper plated zinc, weight 2.5 grams.
If not, then about 3 grams.

Yours is a small date and the weight depends on the composition as there were two types that year: copper-plated zinc and 95% copper. See nss-52's post above.

So it is 3.1 so copper I take it. Last of 1982for book if so.

Correct. Weight should be 3.11 grams for the copper planchets. (Within tollance)
