These were shot using my Canon T1i and Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. My setting was f/18.0, 1.3 seconds, ISO 100. My light source was a ring light positioned about 15 inches above the coin.

Could you post 100% crops. I ask as I am using a calibrated 4k screen ( just re-calibrated 2 days ago) and those pictures do not look that good. Particular the second and third shots, which look out of focus. The low quality may just be reflecting the limited file size allowed by this web site. the 100 % crops will show whether that is the case.

People thought it had been heavily cleaned when I first got it but I really don't think it was... what do you think?

I'll take some more tomorrow and do so as I discarded them already... I shoot in raw and they are HUGE files so to save space once I have cropped them down and saved them as tiffs I delete the raw file. It's possible that some are SLIGHTLY out of focus as I have cataracts and focusing gives me trouble. I Usually take a BUNCH of photos of each subject to allow for that. On these I also stopped them way down to increase the depth of focus.

I have to agree with austrokiwi. All of the photos are out of focus. You have one of the best lens so try again.f/8.0 would be better I guess.

I have problems with ring lights.
They suppress details.
And the brightness in your 1907 image also tends to wash out some details.

I prefer a light source about 20° off from the vertical and located to the northwest.

Here's one of my coins:

If you are using the Canon software when you think you have it in focus chick on the little window and that will magnify it now focus again and you should be good.

I figured out the issue. My tripod is a CHEAP piece of junk. When I adjust the focus the lens, the tripod allows the camera to move a tiny bit closer or farther from the coin and when I let go to take the photo it moves slightly out of focus. I ordered a professional tripod for my wildlife work a couple of days ago but it's not here yet. Should be here by the 10th. I also ordered a remote shutter release for use on night shots and will be able to use that for the coins also...

That's nice BUT you said you have a Canon camera, do you have the software that goes with it?
That software has a remote shutter with it, it works with the mouse.
Rest in Peace

I bought my DSLR used and it came with no software. there is also no way to connect it to the computer and use the screen to focus... so not sure what you mean...

I'm interested in details about the Canon software as well. I just picked up a Canon DSLR last month and am still in the learning phase. I've been manually shooting and I want to use a remote. The wireless one I purchased wouldn't sinc up, so I'm glad I returned it if there is something built in. At this point, I'm still shooting, hooking up the camera to the computer and downloading the images. Also want to learn how to shoot directly to the computer!

Can't you download the latest Canon camera software from the Canon website? You'll need the camera serial number, etc.

I don't like the results from ring lights either. Perhaps you could try blocking out portions of the ring light and see if you like the results better.

I just use one or two Jansjo lights shining down on a conical diffuser attached to the front of the lens. You can move the lights around to get different effects.
