I've been going through a shoe box collection for a friend and came across this cent. I'm wondering if it is an error clipped coin or an alteration post mint. I have no experience with these so would appreciate any help.

That 62 cent is the real deal, a nicely clipped cent..

..but other more experienced experts will add more info for you here..

Looks good.Shows Blakesley effect quite well.
(For those who don't know, that is the effect seen on 180 degrees opposite the clip. This happens during the rimming process when the coin is rolled. The pressure is weak opposite the clip and results in a weaker rim.)

also the tapered rim on each side of the clip is a good indicator of a genuine clip. if it was PMD, the rim would appear cut, not tapered. cool find but only worth a couple of bucks.
