Thanks, Spence , I have about 20 coins of the period 1000-1300 , but most without date .I know little of this period so it is impossible for me to date the coin , if it is not indicated when I buy , but I love these coins now because I did not know there was such a variety . albert

Quote: I know little of this period so it is impossible for me to date the coin , if it is not indicated when I buy Well, if you want to open up a couple new threads and post some pics, I'll see what I can do to help you with more precise dating of the coins. Then, when I have absolutely no new information to provide, @bobL will figure it out for both of us.

Here is a Massa from Ceylon (a so-called "Octopus Man" coin). It can be dated to 1208-9 AD as it was issued under the authority of the infant king Dharmasoka Deva and is attributed as Mitchiner 842, 843, or 844.

You can clearly see the lotus flower on the obverse and the conch shell on the reverse... Nice coin! Paul

Thanks for the kind words guys. I think that the octopus man is an iconic coin design and was super-excited to get this one. Moving back the the 12th Century now. Here is a Denaro minted by the Italian City State of Brindisi. While the date is not on the coin, it can be dated to the year 1196 AD. The obv legend is "+FREDERIC REX" and the rev legend is "+. INPERATOR". It is attributed as Biaggi 436.

Any idea how they arrive to date such a coin .,It is a coin of the Hohenstaufen ( the eagle ) and of Frederic II Barbarossa , but how the find the year ? Also a reference to a sale I found when I tried to date my Brindisi-coin , I found finally the exact date ( 1249) in the Corpus nummorum Italicorum XVIII,Fred,129 . albert https://books.google.be/books?id=iW...=biaggi%2043

Albert, yes I am familiar with CNI, although that is not a reference that I own. As I have mentioned previously, finally getting my copy of Biaggi was a minor triumph.
As to your question about how we can date certain coins more specifically than the overall reign of the issuer, I can't say for sure, but my assumption is that certain design elements or inscriptions were used for only short periods of time. I have observed that this seems to be particularly true for medieval Hungarian coins, but is also the case occasionally for French and Italian coins too.

Moving on to the 1180s, here is a Denier from the French Diocese of Cahors that dates to between 1184 and 1187 AD. The obv legend is "+ oEPIS COPVS" and the rev legend is "+ CATVRCENSIS". It is attributed as Depl. 1163 and Roberts 4664.

Two great wine towns (Cahors and Reims)! At least in modern times. Sad to say I know more about the wines of these places than their coins (or ... maybe not so sad ). I am out for a few more days, but continuing to enjoy as a spectator.
