I agree that your denier from Reims is pretty sweet Albert. We are now on o the decade of the 1170s and it is looking like this might be a hole in my collection. Hopefully someone can come to our rescue.

I'm sure it is a beauty, but that date range is just too wide for us to move thread back another decade. Please feel to post it here in the meanwhile (or on a separate thread if you prefer).

I am out until the 1130s I may have something that starts in the 1170s, but I am certain it would not be dated to within a decade.

Yes very nice--glad you posted it while we are waiting on a coin definitively minted in the 1170s.

Looks like we are stalled for a little while looking for a coin minted in the decade of the 1170s. While we wait, here is a coin minted between 1172 and 1196 AD (and therefore too wide of a date range to let us progress backwards). It is a Hungarian Follis and attributed as Huszar 72. The obv inscription is REX BELA REX STS and the rev inscription is SANCTA MARIA.

Wow! Such nice detail on that coin. I have wondered how far back the use of Mary's image as patron saints on Hungarian coins goes ... I will post one with a similar range, though starting later in the 1170s. This Polish denar from the Krakow mint shows a church obv. and a castle rev. It is attributed by Gumowski (as G.121) to Casimir II, who reigned 1177-94. I understand Kopicki assigns it to Mieszko III (as K.7047b), whose reign was 1173-1177 and 1198-1202 I don;t have a copy of Kopicki.

Quote: I understand Kopicki assigns it to Mieszko III (as K.7047b) Yep that is correct, although it is in a section labelled "uncertain". Thanks for posting! Hopefully we will get one minted just in the 1170s so that we can continue moving backward in time.

Koln, Archbishop Philip von Heinsberg, denier Type III (1175-81). Obv: EPICOP HITAPC. Rev: PAICHAIEACOTONIA I have it attributed as Hav. 541. Only problem in moving us forward is that I no longer own the coin (sold last year).

Quote: I no longer own the coin You dashed my hopes for moving on with this thread. It is a great coin, but fails to meet the very first rule relating to ownership. Let's stay here for a little while longer and keep looking for someone who can move us backward in time.

I know this was a while ago, but Quote: For 1330s, this gros from Brabant was minted December 1339, mint not indicated. Legend around rampant lion is MONETA BRABAN. Legends on other side are BNDICTV SIT NOME DNI RNI IHV XPI and interior IO DUX LO BRAB. Attribution is W.359. I noticed Numisma has the wrong date for this coin I'm assuming you mean Numista, as they have it at 1337, but in case you actually did mean me, I have a very similar leeuwengroot from Flanders, though it was struck later (1346-1384).

@numisma, yes looks like a typo. Hope you are gearing up to help us with this thread now that you are back in the CCF fold.
