During the years 193-197, civil wars raged the Roman empire, with multiple rulers claiming to be emperor. Clodius Albinus was one of the pretenders, and in 196 he declared himself augustus, with Lugdunum (Lyons) in Gaul as his base. He was defeated and killed in battle in 197. 196-197 CE, denarius, Clodius Albinus, RIC IV Clodius Albinus 20. IMP CAES D CLO SEP ALB AVG / FIDES LEG-ION COS II, Lugdunum.

Great coins posted yesterday, including some that were minted for more than a decade. That is fine as we get to see more coins and there was at least one that allows us to drop back to the decade of the 180s today.

I tend to go by "earliest possible date" rather than "latest possible date" but I could do the latter if that's preferable.

Quote: I tend to go by "earliest possible date" rather than "latest possible date" Yes that is exactly the intention for this thread. For example, your most recent Orichalcum Sestertius, which was minted between 198 and 217 AD belongs to the decade of the 190s. This is exactly what you did. My comment was more that the minting period was too long since it goes past 208 or 209 AD.

Got it. It can be difficult to accurately date Roman Imperial coinage sometimes if there aren't any giveaways (consul/regnal year, references to specific events, etc.) especially for Emperors who reigned for quite a long time.

100% agree and would add that it isn't just the Roman coins that often lack the specificity needed to advance this thread. And then sometimes you can pick up a coin like @vic's sweet Denarius or this Parthian Tet that is datable to *October* 173 AD. It features Vologases IV and is attributed as Sellwood S.84.48. Added: tomorrow we drop back to the 160s!
