I picked these three as solid examples of MS-65, 66, & 67 grades. The BTW's are surprisingly difficult to find in these grades or higher. I do plan on putting a full set of these together, simply because they are relatively easy to find and pay for, even in higher grades.
With the 1982 George Washington 250th Anniversary Commemorative Half Dollars, the US Treasury ended its long standing opposition to commemorative coins and the era of modern commemorative coins began . PL 97-104 provided
Quote: for the minting of half dollars with a design emblematic of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of George Washington.
It would be great if they changed the Washington quarter to that portrait. I really like that one much better.
I apologize for being way early on these last two CSC, but I'll be gone well past the 14th when we close out this thread. Please forgive me for wanting to get this accounted for.
There is no cell phone coverage at our cabin on the lake, which drives my grandkids totally stark raving insane for the first few hours.
Today is West Point Bicentennial Commemorative Silver Dollar day

Quote: Hail, Alma Mater dear, To us be ever near, Help us thy motto bear Through all the years. Let duty be well performed, Honor be e'er untarned, Country be ever armed, West Point, by thee.
Guide us, thy sons, aright, Teach us by day, by night, To keep thine honor bright, For thee to fight. When we depart from thee, Serving on land or sea, May we still loyal be, West Point, to thee.
And when our work is done, Our course on earth is run, May it be said, 'Well Done; Be Thou At Peace.' E'er may that line of gray Increase from day to day, Live, serve, and die, we pray, West Point, for thee.

Quote: The Corps, bareheaded, salute it, with eyes up, thanking our God. That we of the Corps are treading, where they of the Corps have trod. They are here in ghostly assemblage. The men of the Corps long dead. And our hearts are standing attention, while we wait for their passing tread. We Sons of today, we salute you. You Sons of an earlier day; We follow, close order, behind you, where you have pointed the way; The long gray line of us stretches, thro' the years of a century told And the last man feels to his marrow, the grip of your far off hold. Grip hands with us now though we see not, grip hands with us strengthen our hearts. As the long line stiffens and straightens with the thrill that your presence imparts. Grip hands tho' it be from the shadows. While we swear, as you did of yore. Or living, or dying, to honor, the Corps, and the Corps, and the Corps.
A few anecdotes concerning West Point and the Long Gray Line that some may find interesting...
Quote: What is the significance of the Cadet Colors? ------ The components of gun powder are charcoal, saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and sulfur, which are black, gray, and gold in color.
What is the oldest regularly garrisoned military post in the United States? ------ West Point has been garrisoned since 20 January 1778.
When was over half of the American Army stationed at West Point? ----- After the Revolutionary War, Congress reduced the Army to 80 men, 55 of whom were stationed at West Point.
When did cadets "cheer" for Navy at an Army-Navy football game? ------ In 1943, Wartime travel restrictions kept the Brigade at Annapolis when the game was at West Point. As a result of a coin toss, the First Regiment learned Navy songs and cheers, wore white caps to the game, and "helped" Navy beat Army.
And finally, my example of the proof silver dollar...
Thanks, Bad Dog. This will be my last view of this thread for some time. I would like to thank everyone for the care and history and information and great photos you have provided.
It has granted me much better respect for the modern commemoratives and helped me enjoy other examples of the CSC set.
